Hey gals - Since I'm flat on my back I was thinking now would be a good time to learn more about herbs and herbal remedies. Does anyone have a book/many books they would recommend?

Thanks :)

Thanks everyone!
Klara, I took a year of French in high school but am under no illusion it stuck with me all that well. I'm sure I could learn it back tho.
I will look into all these books! Thank you :)

Lynn, anything by "Hildegard von Bingen" is worth studying, I think.(She was German, you may have heard from her if you are into herbs and they have a bunch of her writing translated into English). Also, if you can find books by "Maurice Messegue". He is originally French. There is supposed to be an accent (') on the second and third e of his last name, but I don't know how to do that on my keyboard. Most of his books were also translated into German, if you don't know French. My personal standard is called "Kraeutersegen" by E.M.Zimmerer (editor) and was originally printed in 1896, but there are more recent reprints. I also recommend "serious" aromatherapy books to learn about herbs, because the properties of a plant related through their essential oils is most often closely connected to the way they work in leaf, flower, root, etc. form. As to aromatherapy, I recommend reading Susanna Fischer-Rizzi, the longtime Swiss "Zar" of aromatherapy.

I have lots and lots of books...But I think the best reference is Rodale's Illustrated Encylopedia of Herbs...Also- Jim Long has written several about Herbal Cosmetics, and recipes...I only have small books of his but he probably has larger ones...I plan on catching up on them this winter~~~

Thanks, all! Amazon.com, here I come. :)

Klara, what are some older and out-of print ones you have? Wondering if I could find them on e-bay. I can read German so if any are in that language I'll be fine.

I totally second the Susun Weed recommendation! No matter if it's her "early" works or more recent writings, she is excellent!

Hello. I would suggest anything by Susun Weed and Rosemary Gladstar. They follow the Wise Woman tradition of healing and both offer good home study courses. There are others that are good but they have escaped my little brain. Will try to post the others.
Bright Blessings,

Lynn,
this [see link below] may not be exactly your basic learn-about-herbs book, but it is one of my favorites. Unfortunately I let some one borrow it and am affraid I'll not get it back. Since you aren't well and it sounds like you have time to invest this may be an interesting and inspiring read. With the standard off the shelf herb book (mostly the one with "...bible..." as part of their title) I had some very disappointing experiences. I have been "studying" herbs for about 20 years now and am using mostly out-of print and/or antique editions, some of them in foreign languages, since the "old" world is a little bit ahead in the subject. Let me know if you need to know more.
Get well soon!
