i mentioned this on the plastic toy post, but because i think it is important and don't want others to miss, here it is again. " ***a chemical used in plastic baby bottles- and many other food and beverage containers- causes genetic damage in mice, a new study suggests. But the plastics industry says there is no cause for alarm!"
www. mindfully.org
in the study they showed that very low doses of a common plastics ingredient may cause these effects. Dangerous amounts of the chemical- known as BPS- CAN SEEP OUT OF USED PLASTIC BOTTLES. NEARLY ALL plastic baby bottles in the U.S. are made of this.

the web site has more info. its worth reading

I remember getting glass baby bottles at Walmart for my 1st, Rita, to drink water from years ago. But when I looked at Walmart for them recently, I found none - phased out for plastic, I guess. Maybe it depends on where you live & how high the demand is for "alternative" products.

Wow,
Back when I was feeding babies we had glass bottles. Don't they make those any more? Very sturdy and I never broke one. I never liked the idea of plastic baby bottles, worried they didn't get completely clean or something.

Here are some articles I googled.

Personally, I don't know who to believe anymore. I do know I avoid heating my food in the microwave in plastic. I have re trained my kids not to either. But I will store our left overs in plastic for now.
BUT just to be on the safe side, I will replace our water bottles with the stainless variety as my budget allows. I have also purchased more and more glass containers to store food in as my budget allows as well.

wow, i'm going to check that out tom. My only worry about bringing this topic up ( here or any place) is that i don't want mothers to turn away from breastfeeding. I am on kid 4 and so thankful to GOD for my breast! (well, at least thankful for the milk they produce, not so thankful for the look they are sporting these last few years, but thats another story!) they thing to know is that information is power! with power we can make a change, even if it is slow. at least we can try to not go with the flow. fight back! avoid every chance to stay away from harmful things. to some it seems like we are crazy, but to us and our children, it's looking out for each other.

I'm breastfeeding my 3rd child now (16mos), and I honestly try to tune out all of the scary stuff about bio-magnified chemicals in our milk. We know we're doing the best we can do for our babes when we raise them as naturally as possible. I have to remind myself that the rest is out of our hands. That said, if anybody wants to delve into the controversy (& what we might be able to do about it), read some of Dr. Sandra Steingraber's work. Here's an excerpt from an interview with her, from The O'Mama Report:

"Speaking as a mother, I can say that breastfeeding has been a joyful, liberating experience. It extends the symbiotic relationship between me and my child, which I felt so keenly while I was pregnant, and it has freed me from the drudgery of buying, preparing, and cleaning bottles. Speaking as a biologist, I can say that breast milk is a far better food for babies than its inferior pretender, infant formula. Breast milk is literally alive: it swims with white blood cells that confer protection against disease. It contains special sugars and fats that help knit together neurons in the brain. It protects against diabetes, obesity, juvenile arthritis, and certain cancers. Human milk is unsubstitutable. And yet, it has also become the most chemically contaminated human food on the planet. It is time we had a public conversation about this problem."

Also, her book is called Having Faith: An Ecologist’s Journey to Motherhood

I don't know about bottles, but speaking of baby items, I heard that the mattresses they use for cribs have been known to cause crib death as the gases from the mattress enter the lungs and while the baby is very young it cannot pull it's head away before it poisons them. I also heard that foam rubber in mattresses causes fibromyalgia. Who really knows these things or wants to chance them? You have to ask yourself if the risk is worth it.
I pray that both are false claims.
Hugs to the babies.

oh and on the breast feeding note (which i am doing now!) traces of this trash show up in our milk! i never even thought about that. Now be sure to understand that the good in our milk is still usually stronger than the trash, but what will that be like in another 10 to 15 years? i just know that i have to retrain my girls (and boy) to live diff. i want to have healthy children and someday GOD willing grandchildren! it's hard to explain to little ones why we have to make these changes, but years from now i know we will all be better for it and it will be second nature for em.

On the same note, Nalgene water bottles with a recycling #7 on the bottom will leach polymer into the water. This comes from a bio-medical engineer of a major hospital in Vancouver and there was significant controversy recently when they were handed out at a breast-cancer fundraising run.
Ever find you're more and more paranoid lately?

Shawna- I know of a brand called born free that are plastic and safe. We use a Klean Kanteen stainless bottle with avent nipples (well- now we use the sippy cup attachement). Thanks for the heads up;)
