I got the results back from my physical and I'm frustrated with myself for letting my body get like this. I have found out that my cholesterol is out of wack, the regular number and the two bad ones are within normal range but the hdl is low, and I am prediabetic. I have already drastically changed my diet and begun some serious exercise but I feel very overwhelmed. I am supposed to go back to the doctor in 6 weeks to be retested to see if the numbers have changed at all. I think I'm going to make an appt with my naturopath in another week or so as well, even though I was just in to see her a month ago, to see what suggestions she has for me to get this under control before the doctor tries to put me on meds. I'm really, really trying not to let this get to me as badly as it has been but it just seems so overwhelming.

Elizabeth, I'm Type 2 Diabetic and recently started with insulin because my levels were staying pretty high. (high 400's) I was prediabetic for a few years and I'm afraid I didn't take care of myself like I should have. This year I started suffering with the complications associated with diabetes and about a month ago I didn't know what to do, I felt so bad. I went to the doctor 3 weeks ago and he put me on Byetta, which I inject into my stomach and Actos and Humalog (insulin). One side effect from the Byetta is that it slows digestion and causes weight loss. I feel full most of the time and I'm eating healthier. So far I've lost about 7 lbs. I'm hoping that I won't have to be on these meds long though. Maybe after I lose more weight and get the levels back into normal range I can try to control by diet and exercise.

I had forgotten about the cinnamon helping with diabetes! I'm going to start eating more of it on my oatmeal. I really to want to get off the meds as soon as possible and try to manage it with a healthier and more natural lifestyle, but for now I'll follow doc's orders. I wish you the best Elizabeth and hope you have success in the prevention of the diabetes and cholesterol problems.

Thanks Annika and Frannie! You both had some great suggestions and I greatly appreciate the support!

Annika, about how long did it take you to get out of the prediabetic zone and what kinds of things did you do to get to that point?

been there!!!! NOW TYPE ONE DIABETIC .. but cholesterol is fine now! follow your doc's advice! you'll be jus' fine! just take good care of YOU!!! xoxo

i don't like having diabetes .. but i keep telling myself that there sure are a LOT worse things can happen to us. just make your health a number one priority! (HA! i sure wasn't singin' that tune two nights ago .. when i had a LOW .. and realized in my fuzzy state of mind that i had left my 'blood sugar testing equipment' at a restaurant 30 some miles away! i jus' ate a little sweets t'il it came back up and hot-footed it over there yesterday morning to pick it up!)

my doc said that many diabetics are better off than lots of non-diabetics .. who don't think they have to take care of themselves and never get anything checked or taken care of and WHAMO .. something dreadful sneaks up on them!

with diabetes .. you are in your doc's office every three months being 'monitored'. xo

'Lizbeth, you can do it. Trust me, you DON'T want diabetes. Apples n' Oatmeal fer sure!
Cinnamon baked apples are yummy and I haven't tried stevia, but it would likely go well with what you need.I confess, I use splenda, even though I know it's evil I lowered my BP with losing some weight and got out of the prediabetic zone which scared me stiff! I'm already hypothyroidal with other metabolic troubles and my BF is type 2 diabetic with a tendency for wonky cholesterol levels. Both of us have really had to change the way we think, eat and live to get in better health, but it's worth it, we are still no where near where we want to be, but it's a good fight. Not a lot of fun at first, but better in the long run. I'm STILL fighting with my chocolate and pasta addictions, but I'm much better at portions and telling myself no when I want to pig out.

We have made it fun by going online and finding as many tasty sounding low carb/low cholesterol/low fat/low sugar recipes as we can and giving 'um a try. Get as much info as possible, don't be too overwhelmed, you caught it in time to still have options. And yeah, you got lots of farmgirl hugs comin' your way!

Wishing you joy in small things and peace in your heart

Annika

Thank you all so much for the encouragement, I appreciate it more than I could say!

Judith, I have been reading a lot about natural ways to bring down blood sugar as well as helping the cholesterol and had read that cinnamon was a good thing to try. I think that'll be one of my first additions to the good diet and exercise.

Oatmeal and apples. Pretty good stuff and put extra cinnamon on the oatmeal (good against diabetes) and try stevia as a sweetener, as it is very effective in balancing blood sugar. Google it and get lots of info. Hang in there, you can do it! FarmGirl Hugs!

I agree with Jonni and I would do just about anything to avoid cholestrol lowering drugs. I tried Lipitor for six weeks at the advice of my doctor. Now I have some advice for him about what he can do with it! lol Terrible stuff.
I think you'll find you'll be amazed what a little diet and exercise change can do for you Elizabeth. I've managed to drop fifteen pounds and have an app't. on the 21st for a check up. I'm interested to know if it has made a difference to my cholestrol.

So sorry, Elizabeth. I'm sure it IS frustrating, but now you know--and hopefully, with the help of a few enlightened folks, you can get yourself back on track. It's all about the knowledge, and getting to know how your body reacts and works.

This is manageable, so don't beat yourself up--you found out in good time, and you can make changes for the better.

I'm pulling for you!
