My "Farmgirl" grandmother and my OB nurse mother both promote warm Coke for every tummy ailment, good "electtrolights" and calories. Me, I stay away from caffine and sugar like the plague. Mostly cuz I feel like the plague after. So do any of you WISE women have some healthy sugestions? Mint tea is helping a bit right now.

I really was helped by some ginger candies called "ginger chews" made by "The Ginger People," and also I always carried a bottle of spearmint essential oil, not peppermint, around with me and would put a drop on my collar or sleeve and just inhale whenever I didn't feel well. Oh, I had terrible morning sickness with this pregnancy - it just stopped about 2 months ago - and these things really helped. I hope you are feeling better!!!

Juicyfruit chewing gum is what saved me many years ago from morning sickness that I had at 5:00 pm daily! My husband was told of this trick when he was in the Navy to help with seasickness. Sure helped me. Good luck!!! Hugs, Luzy

Ok, here's the thing, I am sick all day and night, it is actually getting better now (Thank God) but I am still pukie. Crackers don't help me much, but I'm going to try the sandwich idea. I notice that protein and cab combos seem to help. I ate cottage cheese and canned peaches for a long time and those work really well, but I'm sick of them now. Mostly I guess it's nice to just hear about this and know that I am not going to die, at least not today. This is baby number 4 you really would think I would know it all by now.
To add insult to injury I often will dry heave with no warning and wet my pants. Good thing it's all worth.

I went to a OB nursing conference some years back and heard a great talk by a gal who is a registered dietician specializing in hyperemisis. What causes severe morning sickness during pregnancy is your blood sugar dumping out. When you get hypoglycemic, your body pulls from fat stores and this is what gives you the sensation of being ill. If you do not eat anything between 8pm and 8am you will get hypoglycemic and the crackers won't do much for you. You need an extra 200 calories a day beyond normal diet to sustain the growth of this little one (ex. glass of milk and half a PB sandwich. So you can appropriate that to late night snacks. She sugested complex carbos plus protein, like potato, pasta, bread or rice before bed and in the middle of the night so you don't drop low. I would choke down a baked potato and some lowfat sourcream before bed and then kept a peanut butter sandwich handy by my bedside so that when I got up to go potty (you know you are going to do that around 2-4 aM :-)) I would try to gobble that down. This helped emensely to get my day started right. Then you need to find healthy things to nibble on all day.

One book out there on hyperemesis also says to find foods that meet your cravings. They fall into to four groups. Salty, sweet, sour, dry. Which ever appeals to you, try to find healthy choices. For me alternating pepermint (altoids) with lemon (jolly ranchers) got me through the 24 hour nausea waves. It could be totally different for you.

I think these guidelines really help people with morning sickness as well as the more serious hyperemeis gals out there. Good luck from one who has been there three times!

Just read into this and since this thread started weeks ago, my advice may already be obsolete (morning sickness often stops as fast as it started). Here is my experience: listen to your body and eat/drink whatever you crave, no matter how "off" it may seem. I have talked to women who where helped by hazelnuts, vanilla pudding, sauerkraut, dry rolled oats, krackers, pretzels, milk, you name it. I firmly believe that your body will tell you what it needs to get relieve. Just follow your instincts and you can't go wrong. Once you found out what helps, have it at hand at the time when the symptoms usually strike. And don't be surprised when everything changes without warning.

Check out the post about bananas. The study listed says to snack on banana between meals as it helps keep sugar levels up and helps avoid morning sickness. I am one who was of the crackers and ginger group. It will just be matter of seeing what works for you. Simply, Julia

My mom swore by the saltine remedy. I don't know why I never tried it with either of my pregnancies, maybe because I never actually threw up, just wished I would. I agree with the eat what you have a craving for advice, except that the first thing I wanted to eat with my daughter was tomato soup and eat it I did. Oh my lord, the heartburn was worse than the morning sickness. My first doctor with my son's pregnancy recommended the Coke remedy, but I wasn't willing to do the caffeine. He also suggested taking a couple of tablespoons of maple syrup if you can get it down. I wasn't even willing to try as just the thought of it gagged me.

I recently heard that smiling can help nullify the gag reflex- so until you can get something down to calm your tummy- try grinning!

whoah lucky clare!! I had 2 in a row and with my first I did similar to you and I was only over my starting weight by about 10 lbs, then with the second I retained a TON of water (like pitted adema kind of retention.. it was totally gross!!) and I shot up by about 60 lbs!! I gained it all so fast that I got some pretty freaky stretch marks too, but they are finally starting to go away. I am down a lot now, so if I can just lose that last 20 I'll be back where I started.

Saltine Crackers chewed slowly and NEVER start your day running up the stairs. Then after first 3 months never had another problem. It was funny, I gained only 10 pounds and then lost 10 pounds while carrying my son. So when I gave birth I was the same weight as before I got pregnant.

They're called Motion Sickness Bands and a lot of people use them when they're sailing or flying.

I used them with my daughter and they're the only thing that helped with her. With my son I could drink ginger tea or peppermint tea and it would go away but then again I wasn't that sick with him.

Dr told me that little girl's make you sicker because of the extra female hormones floating around in your system. It was certainly true for me....true for anybody else?

I'm not sure what it's called, but my neice used a bracelet from the health food store that had a ball on it and used a pressure point to make the morning sickness go away.
this might be one one, see below.

Thank you for all the replies, since this is pregnacy#7 in ten years, I should have all this down pat, but now that I can have no processed foods, even the crackers that helped SO much in the past are a dietary no-no. I am so looking forward to finding the ginger. I have also recently found a sugar free all natural lemonaide recipe that I am now eager to try. Tomorrow is shopping day, but I may make a special trip out tonight if the other 6 are cooperating with me!

My girlfriends and I always swore by lemon drops, the large ones coated in sugar you know?..Hope that helps.

Lemon Juice has been found in some studies to help. It helped me! a little........sorry but I'm one of those women who has to wind up with IV's. Nevertheless some lemonade stayed down and even the smell helped (Salt City makes a really nice lemon scented candle). Ginger does help as well. Also if you are craving something.......eat it! Normally it will stay down. All that stayed down for awhile with #4 was PB and Nutella sandwiches, but hey it's better than nothin.

Blessings,

Holly

one of our docs recommends dried ginger; you can buy it as candied ginger in the produce department here at home.

i thought it was dumb but i was sooo sick the last time, i tried it and it worked for me. i nibbled on it before my head ever came up off the pillow and i never threw up again.

2nd trimester is almost always better-so hang in there.

talk to you soon.

Saltine crackers before you get out of bed. I would get really "sick" at 4 am and 4 pm. The crackers made a huge difference. Luckily, my morning sickness stopped when I hit the second trimester, but all through my pregnancy I could not stand the smell of coffee. I never drink it anyway, but my poor husband would have to wait until he got to work to have his morning cup!

I ate ritz crackers in the morning (more flavor than saltines I guess) and that seemed to help. I had an easy time of it after the first 3 months...UNLESS I smelled bacon..that would make me lose it every time!! I couldn't drink soda of any kind...or any sweet drinks really....I drank alot of water and ate crackers to get past that first part of the morning.
I had never heard of preggie pops..interesting!!

I did resort to crackers on occasion but the thing that really helped and is very high in folic acid was apricots, dried or fresh it didn't matter, for me it was the magic remedy and I had morning sicknes 7 months! Jasmine tea helped too!

being that I've been pregnant and or nursing for the last 2 years I may have some insight on this one.... What really helped me (especially with my most recent one when I was wickedly sick) was The Vitamin B6, which also occurs naturally in many beans, It helps to inhibit nausea, beans are also very starchy so they help to absorb some of that stomach acid. Going heavy on the starches, soda crackers like they were saying above, baked potatoes, dry bread.. all that was a big help for me.

Never let your tummy stay too empty for long just a cracker or two will help if you can't keep anything else down, and keep the crackers by your bed, that first time you stand up in the morning gets everything moving and if there is nothing coating your stomach you will get sick.

Some other things that help is sucking on mild hard candy. Mint is very helpful to soothing the stomach, so a bag of starlight mints in your purse are helpful... (also helpful in getting rid of the sudden onset of barf breath)

Also.. take your prenatals before bed so you don't have to walk around with that huge pill dissolving in your gut, making you feel gross all day.. plus if you take it at night you wont have to taste those gross prenatal burps all day long.

You can also look into preggie pops. I never tried them but everyone in my mommies group just swears by them http://www.threelollies.com/

It won't last the whole time and sometimes you'll just want to curl up and die.. or at least have the guy that got you this way curl up and die.. so hang in there, and even if you choose to load up on the starches, try really hard to have a balanced diet for the sake of your sprout.

Hope I helped!!

Bobbi

I agree with the soda crackers- that is a must to have for morning sickness.
Also try some Ginger tea- hot or cold- caffine free. It's very good for the tummy and even yummy if you can find it mixed with a fruit. I love Ginger Peach and Ginger Lemon.
