I have been to the ER three times this week!

Tue am I felt like I had a lump in my throat and a little bit of a rash. Tue evening (11pm or so) after a shot of solumedrol, Benadryl and Zantac I was back because I was Bright red in the face neck and back, Shot of benadryl. Then yesterday at 2am I was in because of feeling like a lump in my throat again. Epi -- not fun -- but it didn't help to much. Xrays-negative. Acid Reflux? Today I've felt good on Prednisone, Atarax and Zantac until we got home, now I'm pink again.

We just moved into quarters the 24th of June and I really don't want to move again! But I'm afraid there may be mold under the carpets! They are older industrial brown and suck up water very quickly.

Any thoughts???

I don't want to keel over from some horrible reaction but I can't be on Benadryl or Atarax for the next 4 years!

Sigh

We have a Carbon Monoxide detector on each level of the house......unfortunatly there are no outlets in the hallways so one is in the living room and one is in my bedroom.

Holly-- Sorry to hear you have been having such a bad time of it, I hope it gets better soon. Do you have a CO2 detector in the house? If not run don't walk to get one, because your symptoms are similar to what happened to us when we first moved here. Thank goodness my Dad came to check out the furnace and install all the necessary "detectors" because he started yelling," Get out of the house, get the baby and get outside". Apparently the workmen had vented a pipe into a "dead return" and it was clustering in an area of our laundry/furnace room in dangerous levels. I hadn't been happy about moving to begin with but then I started feeling like I was coming down with the flu, but never got it. I had that lump feeling and swollen glands and couldn't figure out what was wrong. After we aired the house out for a few days and he fixed the problem we were back to normal.Hope you can find a quick and easy course of relief.
Do you feel any relief when you are out of the house for an extended period? That should give you a clue if it is house related or something more transitory like food, clothes, etc. My allergies have worsened since I was 35 (now45) and things that didn't use to bother me can cause some major reactions. My husband has developed allergies too that he never had before and he is not one to complain. I hope you get some relief soon, we're thinking of you and wishing you healthy and well.

with a happy heart

Also, have your thyroid checked. Thyroid problems can make you feel like you have alump in your throat.

See if you can find out who cleaned your post quarters before you moved in (ex-Air Force wife here) if they cleaned the carpets chemically that could be what you are reacting to. Also some states are required to spray for fleas whether the previous tenant had pets or not, you can ask about that too.Base Housing office should know I would think. Good luck Hon.

Holly,
While birds really don't adjust to change well, and you may be right that it was just the stress that killed it, it still seems a little odd. Definitely get that place checked out!

Thanks ladies,

I already have a referal in the works for allergy testing. Haven't changed anything as far as sheets, etc. Was on Keflex for a boil but that was stopped on the 26th. Alhtough I have been buying the hamburger marked no antibiotics and the commisary was out so I bought some "normal" and had that twice last week.

I am going to check for mold. We are in a two story on the end and it has carpet throughout except in the kitchen/baths. Hubby is in Iraq so he's no help at present. The problem is that we just moved on post and I really don't want to have to move again so soon if I have to I will but it is a huge pain with honey gone and just now feeling settled.

My son is very allergic to alternaria mold and he seems to be doing ok.

AACCCHHHH!

Holly

ps-- the house we are in was built in the 80's. No new stuff, not newly painted (at least it doesn't smell like it and there was only 5 days between the previous tenants and us), previous tenants didn't have pets (our bird died within 4 days but I think it was stress as the gas lines and co have been checked and they are fine), no new sheets, new laundry detergent, etc.

Holly, have your place checked for black mold. I am no Dr. but I knoe someone who had similiar symtons when she moved into an older home by the water. The ER room will treat you but not cure it. Michele

Hi Holly,

I'm an allergy veteran. Whatever the trouble is, the Emergency Room is ONLY treating your symptoms and NOT FINDING the root of the problem.

If at all possible, see an allergist right away. I know you recently moved. Did you have an allergist in the place you lived previously who you could call for advice? Are you relying on military medicine? Please understand that I am not saying anything bad about them, but if they cannot provide you with the right specialist, you might want to seek help in the private sector because allergies are serious. If you can't see an allergist, perhaps and ENT (ear, nose, & throat) specialist is available.

I once had a friend who reacted to new carpet which had been made from recycled soda and milk bottles. On the other had, I am allergic to the adhesive they use to install carpets because it contains latex. Carpets trap all sorts of allergens anyway. It's better to have hard floors but I realize in you situation, that may not be possible.

Whatever it is, you need to isolate the problem so you can deal with it. I would find a way to have your husband peek under that carpet. Look for low spots where water may have collected. Are you on the ground floor? If you don't find any mold, look around and see what else is really different from what you are used to.

Have you recently changed bath or laundry soaps? Facial cleansers?
Do the cabinets smell like fermadehyde (sp?)?
Do you have new sheets? If you are used to untreated sheets and you change to "no-iron" you should know that they are coated with pine resin and can cause hives and allergic reactions.

It is also possible you have developed a food allergy. You can eat a food one week and the next week, not be able to eat it anymore.
Some things to watch for: strawberries and especially strawberry juice, nuts, sunflower seeds, mangos, shellfish, oceanfish, pork, eggs, milk....

Let me know how you are doing. Okay?
