Hi Ladies,

I tried searching for this but couldn't find what I was looking for.

I was whining to a customer/friend of mine about my allergies, and how I hate taking claritin everyday. But, if I don't, I am miserable and end up with a sinus infection within a few days.
I am allergic to mold, pollen and whatever else is blowing around outside.

She said she had the same problem until she started using a Nehti Pot. She couldn't go into too many details as we both had phone calls to answer. I got her to spell it for me, and where she bought hers before we both had to disconnect our call.
Has anyone tried using one of these? I found one at our local health store, but it seems a bit pricey. I don't want to find out the hard way that it doesn't work.
Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

I am also curious if anyone else has had a negative result with the Neti pot. I bought one for hubby, who has sinus issues. He also has a deviated septum & cannot get the solution to come out of the other nostril. He does say that it helps him blow his nose better, but last night he felt like he was coming down with a cold, & used the pot , & this morning is worse. Not sure if it is the pot, or he was just getting a cold anyway. I figure it can't hurt, but am wondering if with his deviated septum this may not be the best thing. Any advice?? THANKS

My sister uses a Nehti pot and loves it so I gave it a try and it was a no go. I wish it would work for me but when I use it I end up with a terrible sinus infections or ear infections. I have even tried using to get through the infections thinking that it was maybe a side effect of cleaning everything out. I have tried the store bought rinse, health store rinse, and made my own. Even gone as far as using distilled water. If anyone else has had this problem and found away through it PLEASE let me know. I would love to get rid of the stuffiness and congestion that I live with because I will not take OTC remedies of Rx's unless I'm half on my death bed as I hate the way they make me feel.

I just had to mention that my bestest gurlfriend that I have known forever (we grew up together) had been complaining of her nose bothering her. With our dry air and dry houses, her poor nose was taking a beating.
I had mentioned using the Neti pot before, but she always looked at me like it was another hippie idea of mine, and said she couldn't afford to buy herself one. (But, she could afford a bottle of claratin?????)

I decided to pick her one up yesterday as a surprise. On Tuesdays we meet in a nearby town as both of our girls are in the same dance class. I gave it to her last night. She sounded all stuffed up and looked miserable.
She took it home and used it last night and again this morning and loves it!

I got her to try this, and also tucked a petro free soap (kiss-my-face, chamomille) in the bag last night to try too.
Earlier this fall, I made her replace a regular light bulb with a CFL.
Now if I can just convert her to more "natural/green/organic" methods/products....she'll be a Farmgirl before I know it.

Kate, the local honey contains local pollens and can make you naturally immune to the effects of the local pollens.

I'm glad the neti pot is working for you. I find that it also helps to clear out the eustachian tubes in the ears. It's an awesome thing and so simple.

I also use locally grown raw honey, I totally forgot about that.

Blessings....

I use a neti pot every single day and I have ALWAYS had terrible allergies. Since I started using it and eating local honey daily, I have had ZERO problems, sans for my asthma. I use the neti in the shower with salt and once a week with the grapfruit stuff you can get with it.

I HIGHLY recommend the neti to anyone who suffers any kind of allergy issues in the sinus!!

Thanks, Ladies.

I should have prefaced this with that I am diabetic, and taking any "supplements" may interfere with my meds. I will have to ask the doc about the Nettle on the next appointment.

I do keep my house closed up most of the time. I am a wuss, and have the AC on as much as possible. (Had heat exhaustion one too many times....now I am a complete wuss!)
I usually let fresh air in only when it is about 65 or below. My house faces East/West so it takes a beating and heats up like a little oven if I don't have the AC on.

My nose takes a beating when I work at the Ren Fest due to all of the hay, and dust etc. that blows around. It leads to a very stuffy nose, but I love it out there and will endure it.

I will try the nehti pot. Our local health food store sells gorgeous handmade ones made by a local artisan. I would rather support her, than buy a cheesy one at Walgreens.
Can't wait to try it. Will let you know how it works out for me. My friend who told me about it loves hers.

****edit***

I stopped by the store and picked it up Friday night. It is a lovely blue-green one.
I tried it tonight after two days of the Ren Fest and a very "fest-boogied" (stuffed) nose.
It worked just wonderful! I wish I had found one of these sooner!!!!
You do have to remember to breath through your mouth, and it does tickles ones nose.
Next time I use it, I will try it with a bit warmer water too. But I definitely recommend it. Even my eyes seem less congested.
Can't wait to tell my friend next time she calls me.

Off to wash the Fest dirt off my face and head to bed soon.

You can get nettle in dried, tea form or freeze dried capsules. From the research I have seen the freeze dried caps are very good, that is what I use. I was getting mine at a local health food store, but they were not open one day when I ran out and I found some online for less than half the price, same manufacturer which is Nature's Way.

I think the nasal washing is an excellent way to go, you can do it whenever you have been exposed to the pollen, you flush it out and it's gone, nothing to have a reaction to. Also the basics of trying to avoid your allergen, keep your house closed up until a good frost, try not to be outside for any length of time in the mornings as that is when the pollen is heaviest, if you do go outside when you come in change your clothes or even shower and wash your hair to get all the pollen off.

I am soooo excited, it is going to be 39 degrees here tomorrow night. A frost is right around the corner!!!

Kate, so glad you brought this up...and Sarah, thanks for sharing your experience with all of us!

I suffer terribly with seasonal allergies and have been so miserable this week that I finally started on a cortizone nasal spray (which I hate). I sneeze almost continueally without treatment...years of working with dried flowers & plant material.

I'm really happy to hear of some alternative things I can try. I assume the nettle comes in a capsule from any health food store?

Thanks again for this TIMELY info ladies!

Blessings,
Rhonda

Kate

I'm a respiratory therapist as well as a bad allergy sufferer. At the last resp. conference I went to a physician spoke about the use of nasal washing aka the Neti pot as a way to combat allergies and breathing problems as well as sinus infections. I bit the bullet and bought a Neti pot and it is wonderful. To me it makes so much sense to flush away the allergens/infections at the surface level and it works. There are disposable nasal washing systems as well but I chose the Neti pot as opposed to disposable. It takes just a few tries to get the hang of it but it is super easy. During allergy season I will use it more often especially when I have been outside. The doctor as talked about her patients that suffered from sinus infections and that cleared up for them as well. I also use the herb stinging nettle or nettle. It is a natural antihistamine and works fantastic. I used to take Zyrtec, get steroid shots and take Benadryl around the clock to make allergy season bareable. Now it is just the nettle and the Neti pot. I picked up my pot at a health food store for $16 I think, but I have also seen some at Walgreens. I hope this helps!

Blessings....
Sarah
