Posted - Sep 01 2007 : 11:31:06 AM Does anyone have any great ideas for soothing/drying poison ivy? I'm looking for home remedies. We already use ivy dry, benadryl spray, technu, etc. . .but I'd rather use something less chemically for the kids. thanks for ideas! |

Posted - Sep 05 2007 : 10:45:08 AM Amie, I definitely agree that New York is the best!! I grew up in Williamson, which is on the lake, between Rochester and Syracuse, and then lived in Irondequoit. Then for the first 5 years after we had kids we lived in the Plattsburgh area way up north. We WILL return to NY someday!! |

Posted - Sep 05 2007 : 10:39:22 AM Sheila, I'm actually at the very edge of the Finger Lakes Region in Rochester. I get around though, because I have friends and family in Canandaigua, Dundee, Buffalo, and the Southern Tier. I'm an all around Western New Yorker. Although I'm finding that my family roots are in the Potsdam area, so I may be driving up north more often too! I like it all, I can't decide what part of NYS is the best. |

Posted - Sep 05 2007 : 06:18:32 AM What I've heard is that you want to wash with the Fels Naptha when you think you've been exposed to poison ivy to get the oil off your skin and prevent a rash developing. I didn't know you could wash the rash with Fels Naptha to stop the itch.
I've usually used a baking soda and water paste to soothe the rash. It feels much better while it's on and I think it helps the rash clear up (although that might be wishful thinking). But of course, it's not something you can leave on all day under your clothes.
Do pediatricians still recommend baking soda to soothe chicken pox? They did when I was a kid, and that's where I got the idea to use it on my poison ivy. |

Posted - Sep 04 2007 : 6:18:13 PM I use the Fels Naptha soap to dry it up. Just wet the bar and rub it on, let it dry and it makes the itch stop. I have PI right now!! |

Posted - Sep 04 2007 : 07:16:27 AM As far as all natural, jewel weed will be the best bet.
Look for dark green succulant plants that grow near streams and creeks. The flower is a small mottled orange/yellow. The stems break very easily and contain a sap similar in feel to aloe. Break the stem, and spread this juice on the rash.
If you have a good health store, look for any products that may have jewel weed in them. I recall seeing something last year and all it was, was jewel weed extract.

Posted - Sep 03 2007 : 1:39:13 PM we use Burts Bees here or jewel weed...either works really well for Rob (He is the only one allergic to poison ivy!)
Some people recommend Fels Naptha, but I don't buy that as it is soooooo harsh and caustic and the petro chems in it scare the bejesus outta me.

Posted - Sep 02 2007 : 09:37:25 AM By the way just FYI I looked at my Burts Bee's Poison Ivy soap and it is only 99.82% natural. I am not sure what the remaining .18% is but I thought I should reclarify that it is not 100% natural.

Posted - Sep 01 2007 : 8:06:22 PM When my brother, sister and I were young we always seemed to be getting poison oak all the time. We seemed to have good luck with rubbing banana peel over the area. It dried right away. Calamine lotion works too. Good luck. MB

Posted - Sep 01 2007 : 5:51:44 PM Hi! I get poison ivy almost every year. I think the effectiveness of home remedies depends on how bad you have it. One year I used mushed up jewelweed when I had it on my leg-it definitely helped it. Another year, the jewelweed didn't help at all, so I used Zanfel, and that cleared it right up. Yet another year I had it on my FACE . For that I had to go the dr. and take a round of steriods.
Good luck! Jennifer |

Posted - Sep 01 2007 : 5:51:12 PM I use burt's bees poison ivy soap. I am highly allergic to PI. If I just look at the plant I start to get a rash in about 5 minutes. If I use this soap it usually clears up in a day or two. you can order it at www.burtsbees.com It is made with all natural ingredients.
