My 12.5yo daughter came to me today, a little teary eyed. She thinks she started her period - and she doesn't want to grow up - wants to be carefree. My heart was aching for her! We talked about how it's not a curse but a blessing, how emotions change with the cycle, sort of like a monthly housecleaning. I want her to know that it's a wonderful mystery.

Have any of you marked this occasion with your daughter in a special way?

We went intimate shopping for some new pretty things and out to a nice restaurant.

psouper, I have a daughter who will be 13 in Nov. She is going through the same emotional rollercoaster yours is...not sure about it all, and frightened a little. She hasn't started yet but I have a feeling it will be soon. We are planning on having a "period party". When I mentioned a party to celebrate her new step on the journey of life and life giving she really perked up. She wants her 22 yr old sister, myself and even her dad to be a part of the celebration! Her and I will plan a special dinner, of course a sweet dessert, some gifts to celebrate... a journal, a handmade bracelet or necklace, maybe a bouquet of flowers... For those of us of a certain age, myself included, this rite of passage was shrouded in fear and shame...I am 49, and when my first moon came my mother was sullen and angry. My father comforted me and made me feel everything was normal and healthy...I'm glad you are thinking about helping your daughter in this special and eventful time in her young life...She will remember it forever...
