I have something near the tip of my finger, just below the nail on the top of the finger. It is swollen and red, and every few days gets very painful until the skin opens and clear stuff comes out. This has been going on for over a month.
It seems too minor to bother a doctor with (or pay for a doctor visit) but I can't see any kind of splinter or foreign object, and it is beginning to annoy me. I am wondering if it is some kind of fiberglass fiber or other microscopic something or other.
When I was a kid, my dad had something called "draw salve" that smelled and looked like tar. I don't know if this still exists or if it was good for splinters (I think he used it for boils) Does anyone know if a similar product is still marketed? or if it is for splinters?

Raw potato is a terrific poultice! Peel, wrap, cover or bandage it on and let it sleep on the would until morning. Voila! |

Sorry for that...this splinter is inhibiting my typing!!
Anyway, Thanking you guys for all your wisdom. I got a splinter from firewood that went right under my fingernail. Man, it hurts. Anyway, I didn't want to go to the doc, but had no idea how to get it out. So, what do I do? Try the "search" engine at MaryJanesFarm! Lo and behold! Here it is! Heading out to find some of the salve mentioned in this post. I knew the Farmgirls would know how to handle it!!
Anybody else ever had an unreachable splinter under the fingernail?? |

well then try the salt. I have always found it to work. a glass/pyrex bowl/dish. fill with water just enough to cover the area to be soaked. The water should be quite warm. then put in any salt, regular works fine. put in tons of salt and stir until it is all disolved - dip your finger in (not the bad one) and taste it - this is to make sure you have enough salt - it should be VERY salty.
then if the bad finger is not currently open/skin broken then open it up. then put your finger in and let it sit for about a half an hour. when that salt first gets in there, it will probably sting - in fact if it does not put in more salt and make sure that the skin is open.
Once the salt gets in, then a couple of minutes later the yuck comes out. |

I found some "draw-out salve" at Rite Aid. It has ichthammol in it, is black and tarry, but greasier than I remember. It says not to bandage the wound, but yuck! Who wants black vaseline smeared all over everything? So I bandaged it. I can't seem to keep the bandage on anyway, everytime I wash my hands I have to re-bandage. I haven't been using the salve for the last 3 days.
It's still swollen and red, but not so much.
As far as the salves, I did an internet search and found several "draw" salves. One is Dr. Christopher's Draw salve, one is PRID, and LOL, I found that one lady is advertising Watkins Petro-Carbo Salve as draw salve (I sell this, and didn't know it was draw salve! I've used all the other Watkins salves but never this one!) It does have some of the same ingredients as PRID. I also found a brand call Quret.
I think maybe the stuff my dad had was PRID, I kind of remember a red or orange tube.

I'm so excited to see this post! My mom had a tube of black, tarry looking "drawing salve" that she put on very special bad splinters when we were kids. The tube was leftover from her father's pharmacy, so it was at least 10 years old when I was in grade school and the name was worn off the tube. I would love to get some of that stuff, and now I have some names to look for. Thanks! |

I think I've seen drawing salve at Walgreens. Also, you could use an Epsom salt solution. Works great for drawing splinters and healing blisters!

There is a salve called "Prid" it is an over the counter med. Comes in an orange tin and looks and smells like tar. I bet that's what your dad used. I use it quite often because of metal shavings. My DH is a blacksmith and sometimes I help. I'm always getting metal splinters and "prid" draws them out

Walmart carries it but you have to request it from the pharmacist, they have to special order it in for you, and yes it is called Ichthammol.. (the name meaning it is derived from fish ingredients.) looks and smells like tar, used for boils and drawing salve.
It usually costs only about $2 a tube, not expensive at all.
Hope it clears up soon for you.

I bet it's Ichthammol. It is black and smells like tar. Yuck. It will draw out anything that's under your skin though. I get mine at our local small pharmacy, but maybe WalMart or CVs may have it. Good luck in your search! :)
