Hi Ladies!

I was just reading on "Family Matters" about how many diets recommend that you do not eat pork. I find this amazing since when I was pregnant the first time (I have had two miscarriages) I had a REALLY bad reaction to pork and I have not been able to eat a bite since!!

Does anyone have an aversion to pork? I know some religions forbid the eating of pork- but does anyone else just choose not to eat pork? And if so...Why?

Ciao

We only eat the pork we raise or buy at the county fair from 4-H or FFA kids. Right now my son raises 2 pigs a year for FFA. There is a big difference in the quality of the meat. However, I'm not much of a meat eater anyway. I don't eat beef at all.

I also read Fast Food Nation last year. Really makes you think twice about what you eat.

We watched the documentary Supersize Me the other night on satellite. Have any of you seen that?

Hi Alee, The contact lens stuff was an "enzymatic cleaner." It came in little smelly white tablets that you dropped into your lens cleaning vial, then it would fizz away. I'm not sure if they even make it anymore.

Not really. According to my doctor and everything I have read up on it, it's the closest to human thyroid production.

I received a BOX of The Makers Diet from the company to distribute for free. All I need to do is fill out the card in the middle of the book and return it to them. If you'd like a copy let me know. I will not put your phone number or e-mail address on the card. I'm figuring they want the info (name/address) for marketing purposes. Let me know Alee.

I also read the Maker's Diet (have extra copies if anyone is interested). I don't eat a lot of pork beacuse of the bad rap it gets. Sometimes I will hae a pork chop. We have received a pig from a farmer friend a couple of times. My thyroid medicine is derived from the thyroid of pigs.

I had an allergic reaction to pork, at a "pig roast" campout in Iowa when I was thirteen. I can't even use some contact lens cleaners because they contain pork enzymes.

Boy, that bacon sure smells good though!!!!

We also raise a pig a year for ourselves, and have it butchered at our place. Our pigs live a clean healthy outdoor life - more like pets I guess.
We are blessed to have a butcher who will come to the house and do the deed with a .22 rifle. One minute they are happily munching in their pen and the next they are gone. I know it sounds mean if it's not part of your life, but I can't even *think* of the commercial slaughterhouse alternative . . . .

We don't eat alot of pork, and I won't buy it at the store at all...some years we buy a whole pig, from our local butcher...a pig he raises himself locally. We buy our beef that way too...a 1/2 beef will last us the whole year and then some...and I always buy from him since he raises them himself. I raise my own meat chickens and still have some in the freezer, and we have eggs and milk from home and that makes me feel really good.
I can't eat a burger from a fast food place any more after "fast food nation". Yikes.
We have at least one meatless supper a week, sometimes more..especially in summer.
We are for sure not vegetarians but careful. I don't mind paying more and knowing where the meat we eat came from ...exactly!

We don't eat pork. 1 because of all the studies out there that show it to be very hard to keep healthy for you, even your own hand raised 2 because I think the Biblical guidleines given in the Old Testament still hold good wisdom for today.

I do love bacon though........so that's been a bit hard but not terrible.

I hear ya cecelia, Fast Food Nation is pretty intense book that people should read. Myself, I am a vegeatarian but mostly because of health reasons as you may know by studying nutrition yourself. Thought I do not like crulity towards animals. For me The Fastfood Nation was like preaching to the coir but I think it would be good for most poeple to read, it makes you think.

We don't eat much pork in this house. When I was little my uncle had an old time grocery store in the city. At least once a week a farmer came in to pick up the old baked goods which my uncle had not sold (these were things like donuts, etc. which came from a local bakery) - this was when baked goods were made with things like lard, etc. The farmer raised pigs and fed them whatever he could get from the local groceries (this was in the '50's/'60's when there were family owned groceries on nearly every corner in the neighborhood). This was when you would have expected a small time farmer (we called them "truck farmers" because they were only a few miles from the farmers markets in the city) to feed his animals good wholesome food. Needless to say I am now pretty much turned off to meat in general, now that I have studied nutrition and we know more about what to put in our bodies. So - I have been trying to eat healthier. Read "Fast Food Nation" for more info on what not to eat!

I totally agree with buying meat that you've either raised yourself or buy from someone that you know. It makes a world of difference in the taste and quality. I've even noticed a difference in eggs since I've been buying farm fresh eggs locally as opposed to store bought. They actually taste like eggs are supposed to taste!

We only eat pork if it is something that WE raise ourselves from baby to slaughter. There is such a difference in the meat that it is unreal and we can't hardly stand the taste of store bought meat.

Same reason why we raise our own lambs......

I study Nutrition, I hate to tell ya but avoiding pork is highly recomended in probably every book so far. The meat is considered carcinogenic (cancer causing). I've read that their meat is very close to human meat in chemical make-up ( not to gross you out), that may be why it's not very good for you. One problem is that most people buy their meat from the store and that meat must be preserved and it's the preservitives that are sooo bad for you, particularly Nitrates. And pork products in general usually have a lot of Nitrates and they are directly relatived to causing cancer. Farm fesh pork might be a whole other matter since it's not so full of preservatives, I'm not sure, But I've read nothing good as far as nutrition goes about pork.

Blessed Be

Robin - thanks for the info on pork. I have heard similar stories in the past.

I do know that mid-western pig farmers often take very good care of their pigs (as far as feed and water is concerned) and I have one pig farmer friend that one year had to slaughter and bury his own pigs because he could not sell them on the market because of government regulations. These were healthy and good pigs! He lost so much money.

We eat very little pork. I will sometimes grill a chop for my husband or bake a pork loin. But I do feel for mid-western pig farmers trying to make a profit on raising pigs as they should be raised.

Kay - my daughter and her family follow the Hallelujah Diet, and her husband is a diabetic. He has cut his insulin intake by 35% by being on this diet of mostly raw foods. It is based on Genesis 1:29.

We eat one 250 pound live-weight pig a year. We do not eat pork from groceries. I have a friend who works at a pork "farm" in Nevada. The pigs' food is trucked in from restaurants in the Las Vegas area. It's heated to a certain temperature before being cooled and fed to the pigs. Paper napkins and anything else scaped off plants are included in the waste. Add to that any medications the pigs are fed, and the inhumane way they're raised......we'd go without. This is going to sound odd but I believe happy animals taste good. Stressed animals don't. I've often said we would be vegetarians if we couldn't raise or buy our meat from farms. I'm really squeemish and soft hearted about animals.

I was raised in the Midwest and pork was a staple of our diet. However, I hardly eat it at all now although I love it. Part of the reason is not so much my aversion to pork but since the breeding makes it so low in fat it just doesn't taste good to me anymore.

I know that the Jewish religion forbids the eating of pork as they follow closely the guidelines set down in the Old Testament.

My daughter and her family have completely given up eating pork as they follow The Maker's Diet which is based on Old Testament dietary guidelines. Their health has improved so much it is amazing.
