Hee hee! Certainly I would be preaching to the choir if I had to explain this to the Farm Girls!!
I'm always perplexed when I hear that people have punished their children by making them work in the yard. Heavens no!
Wrote about it on my blog today, and shared happy photos of my barnyard. I'd love for you all to come look... and tell me what you think about the rewards of yardwork!

Sandy and all weed lovers; I so agree, its peaceful and rewarding, though after reading MJF posts today I was going to go and weed my own garden but a friend called and wants to go to a farmers market, the weeds can wait just a while longer! |

I' glad to know you are out there encouraging happy times in the yard and garden. What lucky families who get to spend time in your dandelion patch or running through sprinklers...keep up the great work!

Wow, Marilyn! It's just about heartbreaking! I'd love for someone to ask me to rake something! Working in the yard just soothes my soul!
If you saw my pictures, you know that I have a huge yard. I don't like to use any kind of chemicals, so we just take care of if the good old-fashioned way.
Our church is part of New Mexico Christian Children's Home, which also has apartments for single moms needing to get on their feet. While they are in the "program", they're going to school and need some kind of part time job. Many of these women have helped me in my yard... and it's just been a fantastic time to sit together, working on a dandelion patch, getting to know one another, while giving them encouragement that they can reach their goals.
My current helper brings her two little girls with her, and they run through the sprinkler, play with sidewalk chalk, and ride their little scooters around and around. I'm loving the thought that these will be happy memories for them as they grow older. Who knows... maybe they'll be inspired to open a landscape business!!

You are so right about this subject Sandy! I own a landscape business and I can't tell you how many sad faces I've seen over the years when I ask employees to pull weeds or rake leaves as part of a project. Their answer is always the same....."my parents made me do it as punishment". It's an unfortunate story and it usually takes alot of talking to convince these people to give it a try. Most will come around with some positive encouragement but I have actually had several folks quit over the matter. My parents always made yard work fun and I can't thank them enough for their efforts to instill the value of a healthy work ethic!

Sandy,
I posted at your site. I love seeing the before and after version. If you want to turn a kids attitude sour on an activity, make it a punishment. If you want them to love it too, let the joy of working together be a reward.
