Posted - Feb 03 2011 : 9:43:01 PM I enjoyed your blog. I had pet chickens as a child. My grandma and POP raised chickens and turkeys. But... I had pet chickens. They were NOT to be confused, EVER, with the ones we had for supper. Reading your blog, and seeing the pictures you post, made me want to call my 82 year old grandma, at 9:30 pm, and ask her to dig out the old pictures. There is one of me, about 9, sitting on a porch swing, holding Boots, my chick, as a HUGE tom is sitting next to me, using his head movements to make the swing move. Your animals sound wonderful. I'm allergic to all my pets as well, but I'd rather feel icky than not have them. Looking forward to your lye making. How handy to have the wood burning stove ashes. Keep blogging, its a great read.(((hugs)))

Posted - Feb 03 2011 : 6:04:19 PM This is my very first comment in the Farm Girl Connection. I couldn't wait to look around this evening.. .and your chickens caught my eye. A sweet friend of mine is battling cancer. She loves chickens and gave me a very special one that looks so very real. As I was sweeping the snow off of my porch today, I kept seeing her chicken and thinking of her. She would sure love your place! Thanks for giving me the lift. Sandy

Posted - Feb 03 2011 : 1:53:02 PM What a sweet lady you are "the park Wife" aka Stephanie. Its funny how when you are young you think your life will be all mapped out & then as you get older you change directions or go back to the way you were raised. I never thought I would be living my later life again wanting to raise any animal that didn't eat dog or cat food or have veggie gardens that required me to can. I must say though I have finally found some peace in my crazy life & all it took was getting a few chickens! Have a great day my dear...Michele'#2622

Posted - Feb 02 2011 : 11:43:16 PM Hello Cindy! Thank you for your comments, yes I have been an herbist since about 1994 when I moved to Georgia, boy was that a long time ago.....I used to own a business dealing with herbal lye soaps, bathsalts, handmade incenses & so on but finally closed the doors when I got too much grief over my soaps being made the old way with animal fats. I do try to do as much herbal as I can with my everyday life & with my animals. I do have lots of recipes that I would love to share with you anytime you want them just email me with a request & I will dig them out for you before we moved here we were also on 1/10 acre but it was all shaded so hard to grow anything now I have 1/3 acre & lots of sunshine which I love. There is something wonderful about digging & playing in the warm earth & the smell for me is heavon. have a great rest of the week...Michele' #2622

Posted - Feb 02 2011 : 10:01:11 PM Hi Michele! I can understand your chickens not wanting to go outside--this storm has brought frigid temps. How long will your DH be away? I wonder too sometimes about the government and the decisions they make. I hope he's not gone for too long. Are you an herbalist? I've lately been trying my hand at making lotions and lip balms using essential oils and other natural ingredients. I read Grit on occasion; live in town on about 1/10nth. of an acre but I have some veggie gardens. I'm glad you joined the forum. Cindy
