Today is a day that will forever live in the minds of Americans. It is a day of remembrance of those who served this country. It is a day of sadness, of gratitiude of solace, and great pride. I don't think another Sept. 11 will ever pass in time without pause for Americans. I am truly indebted to those, military and non, that served us that day and continue to protect the American people. Today I will raise my flag and place my right hand over my heart to honor you.
I also want to point out something very positive that happened on this day one year ago. Rene' Groom (ruralfarmgirl) posted a thread called "Danger of Extinction". It was a thread that changed my life forever. She told us that there is a LIST of foods on a "danger of extinction" list. Food? Are you serious? Thats exactly what went through my head. But then I was reminded of my Grandfather, and how he grew everything that my mothers family of 7 needed. There wasn't a lot of grocery store shopping back then. Maybe for the basics: flour, sugar, salt...but not for "food". I was reminded of a comment made once that "we are going to have to go backwards before we can go forward". This is a comment that has rung a chord in my heart for nigh on 30 years now. And it amazes me how accurate it is today. Look at our economy. Look at the mess the gov't is in. More people planted gardens this year than ever. More people are growing their own food because its cheaper (and healthier) to do so.
On September 11, 2008 the MJ's Heirloom Maven Chapter was born. Miss Rene' nominated me to Mother Hen it up. We started with a group of 13 and are now 40 people strong worldwide. We've created flyers, and bumper stickers and t-shirts to spread the word about heirloom gardening. We've educated others on the importance of heirloom versus sterile food and how to save seed and replant it again and again. This is stepping backwards in order to go forward. As a Maven, we've enjoyed tomatoes in all shapes, sizes and colors. We've planted purple potatoes as well as red and yellow. Our beans rival that of a crazy quilt...variances in size and shade.
Just like those who served us that fateful day in New York and PA, a Maven is serving you locally. We are ambassedors of the seed. We are defenders of food. I am not trying to equate Mavens to the 9/11 Tragedy, but simply want to share with you how memorable today is for me. Being a Maven changed my life and made me more responsible. I challenge myself everyday to bring heirlooms to the front of ones mind and keep them remembering how food is supposed to be. I am proud to be a Maven Farmgirl. I am even more proud to be an American. Today I encourage you to take note of what's around you and how you can better your life and the lives of those you love.

Dawn, Thanks for the reminder. Eventhough I will never forget 9/11. I also save my seeds and replant. I even did this with lemon seeds and have a nice young lemon tree.
