What is tried and true? I laughed when I read the question. I sell Watkins products, and one of the advertising slogans for the products, especially the old-time medicinal products like liniment and salves, is “Tried and true”… So, of course, “Watkins products are tried and true” was the first thought that jumped into my mind. But what do those words really mean to me?

The first feature of a product that is “tried and true” is that it works. It’s the real stuff. It does what it says, it keeps its promises, the advertising is not false or misleading. It doesn’t contain fillers or unnecessary additives to add volume.

The second thing the phrase means to me is that it is “good”. It is beneficial. It makes the world a better place. It is helpful, it provides value equal or better than its cost. It isn’t watered-down. It doesn’t have fancy non-essential features that end up costing me extra.

It doesn’t hurt! How many times have you heard the advertisements on TV for new pharmaceutical products where the list of side effects includes the phrase “may cause sudden death”? How can the product’s benefits outweigh that potential side effect? Remember the pet food issue last year? In that case, it was an adulterant added to the product to boost the protein content – that ended up killing hundreds, if not thousands, of loved family pets. To me, the third criteria for the phrase “tried and true” is that it doesn’t hurt me, and its production and marketing don’t hurt others, or the environment.

Another feature of a “tried and true” product is that it is consistent. You don’t get bad batches, or bad days. It is the same strength from week to week, and it is dependable, there when you need it. You don’t need to read the instructions every time you use it. It’s not “new and improved” every week because it was good enough to begin with, and any real improvements are considered and tested carefully before incorporating into the old product.

Tried and true, of course, means that it’s been around for a good long time. Sustainable has become a buzzword, but the proof of sustainability is longevity. You can’t become sustainable overnight! The company has been in business for a long time, because they are not around just to make a quick buck and disappear. The profits are not excessive, but moderate, because customer satisfaction and care for employees take precedence over the pure profit motive.

As I sit here typing up my list, it occurs to me that the people in my life who are closest to me are also “tried and true” - they keep their promises, they don’t lie to me, they help me out, they don’t hurt me, and they are available. They’ve been my “best friends forever”. That includes my husband. Even though we've only been together for ten years, he is definitely a "tried and true" guy, I knew it as soon as I knew him. I can only aspire to be "tried and true" as a friend and a wife as well.

You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands - You shall be happy and it shall be well with you. -Psalm 128.2

Tried and true to me means things that have withstood the test of time, without any need of changes or improvement. That being said, tried and true can be your friends and family, your favorite apron (stains and all!) or that recipe that never fails you. It's your trusty hand tools that will never fail you when the power goes out. It's the gardening, health, crafting, and most importantly, life skills that have been passed down through the generations.

Tried and true reminds me of this bible verse:
Ecclesiastes 1:9 What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again;there is nothing new under the sun.

Alee,

Tried and true always makes me think of recipes. I've tried many in books and magazines and then been horribly disappointed with the results. The ones that I hold on to forever are the ones I've inherited through family and friends. These are as tried and true as the relationships I have with these wonderful cooks! For example, every Christmas we make "Aunt Carol's Gingerbread Men"--deliciously reliable for sharing with friends. In the summertime I pull out "Great Grandma Meerwarth's Baked Beans" recipe to enjoy with our grilled burgers--a wonderful reminder of the original Meerwarth Farmgirl who is no longer with us. I still make the tried and true Baking Powder Biscuits that I made as a girl each week for my father--his favorite and my joy to make for him. We make "Uncle Brett" pizza, "Aunt Dana" salad, "Mr. David" soup, and "Aunt Jeanne" sandwiches. I don't even have to look at these recipes anymore, because we know them by heart (or stomach, as the case may be!).

I am so blessed by these people and grateful for their generosity in sharing their recipes with me. So....any recipe I have is ALWAYS free for the asking! I never think twice about sharing my recipes.

Perhaps someday, one of my sweet nieces will ask me for a recipe that will become an "Aunt Carrie" specialty in her home!

Something that has been passed down to you through the years. It could be a saying you remember your grandparents or parents used all the time. It could be a certain way of doing something that works but you just don't know how or why. It just does.

I know my husband is tried and true! He has never failed me through 30 years together. He is a great example of being tried and true. He's honest and trustworthy and dependable. All testaments to being truely tried and true. I am very fortunate to have a man like him. God really knew what He was doing when we crossed pathes! He's exactly what I needed then and still is today.

I remember a story of a lady that always cut her ham a certain way and so did her mother. She asked her mom why she did it and she said her mother did it that way. They went to her mom and asked her and she said that she had to cut the ham to fit the only pan she had and did it that way all these years! So her DD and GD did it all those years and never questioned why and when they found out they still did it. It worked for them.

Tried and true makes me think of my high school friend still in contact as a friend after 30 years.

Tried and True to me is the heart feeling of knowing that you can walk through the fires of life and come out with nothing more than a few singe marks. The stuff you really didn't need burned away to bring out the victorious you withouth all that extra weight and baggage.
Like when you lose your job, or your kids get sick, or you faith is tested, you just move ahead anyway. You don't compromise your standards. You keep what you know in your heart and with the friends that support you, you do what you need to come out on the other end with no regrets.
This is the time when you realize that everything you've learned and all you've been taught over the years comes into practice. You find what is in your heart and you know right then, that it is what makes you who you are.
To me, this is where I've found the meaning of tried and true! :)
