We got our issue of The Western Livestock Journal this week, and a little sidenote on the page stated the the HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) is now going to bring CA Prop 2 to Ohio. Of course I can link to the website, so I can just type out what the article said...
"HSUS executives Wayne Pacell and Paul Shapiro recently met with ag groups and the Ohio Vet Medical Ass. (OVMA) and announced plans to bring CA Prop 2 to the state of Ohio, which ranks nationally as second highest in egg production and ninth in swine. HSUS plans to place a citizen referendum on the 2010 ballot to ban sow gestation stalls, veal crates, and bettery cages for layer hens unless an argreement can be reached beforehand. OVMA's food, animal and legislative committees met for more than six hours to determine the impact this would have on animal welfare and agribusiness in Ohio. The only agreement reached was that the issue needs to be explored with HSUS. Dr. John Kingbore, former CA Vet Medical Ass. president, said, "What we do know is that if there is no dialogue, HSUS has stated that they will simply collect the signatures they need to go to the ballot where the electorate will decide on the issue." So, it could happen again. And if they get Ohio, who's next in line? They will hit the number 3 and the 4 and then 5th state untill they can be stopped. Those producers will have to either leave to another state or get out of the business. They passed in CA because enough people didn't have the information they needed and it can happen again in Ohio. WHere will our eggs and pork come from? Not locally like we all want. This is going to hit the little guys the hardest. They don't have the means to pick up and more and it's their only livelyhood.
I don't know what else to say.. I'm just getting this story out there so we can be aware... I have to get off the computer.. lol been sitting to long! haha

I know, I know, girl. Your hired hand has it figured out. We have an exploding population both in the US and worldwide...basically a world to feed and people expect it to be on the WalMart shelf (not us farmgirls but "those" people... ) and for a decent price. It's going to take intensive farming to get this accomplished. In my book, a sustainable farm is one that makes a living and can stay in business. What will we do with less farms? It's not good.
I need to read up on Prop 2 ramifications too and yes, veal for one has until 2012 (?) to get in compliance with the new laws, not sure on the chickens.
I guess we could be like Julia and start eating roadkill...if we're lucky. See her bird story...it'll make you giggle.

I don't know Jami, I haven't heard that either. Has the law even gone into effect yet? Or is there a time frame that everyone has to be in compliance with? I'm afraid my only source of ag news comes from the Western Livestock Journal, Beef Today, Drovers and the Northern Ag Network on the radio! I'm sure any news on the Prop 2 in CA would be in the WLJ tho.. I'll keep a look out for it..
We were talking about this at lunch, and our hired man said the exact same thing, "Do these people in town know where there food comes from?" They must not! The cages and crates are put up to protect and make it easier on the animal, not only for the farmer's profit.
My hubby said how much easier it was on the sows when they built the farrowing house. All you had to do was pull a lever the the sows got their feed, quick as you please! Water came by 9:30 am and they had it there in front of them all day. The sows didn't get that before out in the A-frames in the pasture...

Hey Elise, thanks for sharing and keeping us informed. I am with you, this kind of stuff leaves me twitter-pated. I know the HSUS would like us all to become vegetarians...do these well-intentioned voters wonder where their food will come from?
So after Prop 2 in CA has passed, do you know how many farmers have gone out of business? I know some of the law is not enforced for a few years so wondering what the fall out is for now? I haven't seen much on it.
