Posted - Mar 10 2009 : 7:49:22 PM I saw in the latest MJF magazine that someone had made and drank the dandelion coffee MJ talked about in her last book. Well, we did too!
We have a small homeschool co-op and the boys are all reading "My Side of the Mountain" and learning life/outdoor skills this year. We were discussing for a couple weeks eating wild foods, and I brought in Mary Jane's "OutPost" book because it has such great pictures of some wild edibles. The class copied the recipe for dandelion coffee in their notebooks because they were so excited about the idea of being able to drink "coffee" that we mammas would actually allow!
Then my youngest son dug up dandelion roots from our yard, cleaned them, chopped them, and then we roasted them and ground them. The next class we took our dandelion coffee grounds and brewed a pot for the class. I brought in steaming cups with cream and sugar and the boys thought they were really special! They all loved it, and plan on doing it again.
The next plan is looking for spring cattails to gather for pickling. Who would have thought Mary Jane could inspire a bunch of 10 year old homeschool boys?!

Posted - Aug 02 2019 : 6:03:15 PM I have heard of the chickory coffee. I have never tasted it. I kind of like my coffee to be a little on the weak side. I really want to taste the dandelion coffee when the dandelions come out again. I'm intrigued.

Posted - Jul 31 2019 : 07:02:26 AM Wow, this discussion was before my time. I have MJ Outpost book and I will take a look and learn more. People make dandelion jelly from the flowers and eat the green tender leaves in salad. I wonder if dandelion coffee is similar to hickory coffee which is plant based and still popular in parts of Louisiana . Chickory coffee blend used to be available in most grocery stores but I haven't looked to see if it is there lately. I have tasted the chickory blend coffee and it is a bit bitter and very strong tasting for my liking. I understand it became a staple in the South during the Civil War days when regular coffee was not available.

Posted - Jul 30 2019 : 6:06:25 PM Fun with yet another older post. I have to get the Outpost book. I have never heard of dandelion coffee. I am going to try it next year. I have a lot to learn about weeds. It sounds so interesting. There are so many things outside that I could be using and taking advantage of and am not. Have any of you other girls done anything with dandelions? Please share.

Posted - Mar 19 2009 : 08:39:22 AM I was very sad to have missed you Renee, and Prosser! My husband came home from teaching that class loaded with cheeses, wines, and chocolate! Oh yes, and he brought me home one of my favorite vinegars from one of the winteries too. I love those fermented, real vinegars for salads. Yum. We decided we may retire there someday- at least spend my birthday there in a couple weeks. I love your little town!

Posted - Mar 13 2009 : 7:25:12 PM :) That was me! Just love that MaryJane for making us part of her magazine. So generous!
I like the idea of dipping the blossoms in egg and frying them up. I'll have to give that a try, thanks! I think cattails are protected in Washington though...but I could be wrong. Definitely want to look into that before pickling them and definitely be sure of the water source. Roots are so good at absorbing and storing that stuff, which leaves the water cleaner, but then the toxins are in the cattail. Best if you can grow your own in your own pond and be sure of what goes in and what doesn't.

I need to get a cast iron pot & lid and besides I'd love it if you were free and could stop for a cup of coffee at one of the little shops... We just got home yesterday from spending the night at the Cave B winerey/Inn- oh my! Glorious!

Posted - Mar 11 2009 : 9:20:41 PM I can't wait for the weeds to get growing! My favorite is fried dandelion flowers. I take dandelion flowers, dip them in egg, then in flour and fry them up in oil. Everyone thinks I'm crazy, but it really is good!
