In about an hour, My husband & I will be leaving today for a class up in Portland on bee keeping. We are excited about starting this venture. I will be back Monday, posting. I love bees! I got my first hive too this year! They are such wonderful little things! I got a package of bees and bought an assembled hive from better bee. The guy I bought the package from was wonderful and had a clinic the day I picked them up so I could learn how to put them in the hive and get them started. I am waiting for a good warm sunny day to open the hive up it has been two weeks since my first initial inspection. It has been overcast and rainy here, and I was advised to only open the hive on warm sunny weather as cool, rainy days, all the "grumpy old ladies" are home. When it is sunny and warm most of them are out gathering for the hive. The first time I opened the hive I used my smoker for the first time and ended up smoking myself more than the bees. I also realized that I didn't like the helmet and hood so I gave up on that and did the initial inspection without any gloves hat or screens. I only got stung once! The next time though I will be more careful with the smoker and try to position myself more up wind.

Cheryl, we have a feed store here that is carrying everything one would need to set up beekeeping. It's so neat to be able to go to a place that has it all. We are too late to order bees this year, but that will give me time to learn more. Good luck with yours!

Hello from the deeeeeep south. This is my third year helping with beginning beekeeping classes. We had 55 people participate and will have our field day this Saturday, weather permitting. I hope your bees do well for you - they're truly amazing creatures!

Well I fianlly get to tell ya.. The class was awesome. We came home with the makings for 1 hive. All the boxes are assembled. * that cost a bit extra but with every thing we need to be doing this spring it willsave us time... We get our bees the last shipment in May for our area. We will get Italian bees.. (cold hardy) we decided to get a Nuc instead of container bees. The Nucs are hive frames with workers, drones & the Queen already in a pulled out hive. Since we are in a short growing cycle. We need to paint the hive and Skunk proof it before we get delivery. Skunks are around here & they eat the bees.. The scratch the opening of the hive, the bees come out & yummy for Skunk.. So you roll chicken wire inn a tube and place it in front of the hive entrance.The skunk then has to stand up (exposing his tummy ) and the bees sting him there where the skin is not as tough. The mouth of a skunk is tough and the sting doesnt bother him when he eats them.. go figure.. We must also decide where to place the hive because if we move it after the bees are here and thriving even 2-3 feet they will not recognise where their home is upon return.. The fly out Straight up and out to the fields. Trick is to move it a few inches each day..if need be. Lots to learn and excited to do so. I will be posting on the blog when delivery day comes. The hives become very heavy when full of honey and bees .. sometimes 150 pounds....

i saw a program on RFD about Bee keeping I thought I would like to but now Im not so sure. I have found a Man that will set up and maintain hives for you. You get a percentage of the honey in payment. I think I might do this
