Colony Collapse Disorder....
http://www.burtsbees.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ContentView?storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&contentPageName=Colony%20Collapse%20Disorder

Did any of you see the cute little "bee" movie with Jerry Seinfeld as the little bee.... While this little animated video is so cute, it is also has a good message... as the movie progresses we see what happens to the world when bees can’t pollinate... and sick bees mean of course a sick world. We cant even being to image the effect of sick bees will have on the world and it is even easy for the ill-informed to dismiss say, oh we have got bigger problems... REALLY? Do we...........???

Saving the Bees is something that we all can take part in. whether it is joining the MaryJane Mavens and committing to growing heirloom and saving seeds, or whether it is to committing to planting bee friendly flowers in your garden. Or as Tina suggests over on the Maven thread, get to know what plants are exclusive to your area and make sure they are staying active alive and healthy.

The link above is to an article and to an "activity" through Burts Bee... describing the Colony Collapse disorder, but you can Google Colony Collapse Disorder and find lots of other info as well.

My dad says, "You gotta stand for something, or you will fall for anything" seems only right that we farmgirls would stand with the Bee's.

Well Well.. Guess what? Dh & I are taking a beekeeping class in March! We are going to be raising bees here in Klamath Falls!
We have been buying honey at the local natural food store and decided why not raise our own.. So off we go to learn how to. we know of only two beekeepers here that sell their honey.. Could be a great business opportunity.
Dh read the article in MJ too...and I bought him a beekeeping book for his birthday. This is great for us both to be interested in this hobby..

I saw the little piece in MJF about letting part of your yard go back to wild. I am on the way to that!! When we first moved here I started a flower garden in the middle of the yard around 2 maple trees. Well, I have not been able to take care of it like I wanted to, like having no weeds and mulching and all that. So needless to say, it is basically a "wild flower garden" now for sure. Lots of weedy flowers the bees love plus bee balm and lots of clover and just things bees are drawn to.

So I am doing a good thing for the environment and most of all the bees and didn't even realize how important it is. And I have been a little embarrassed about the weediness of the garden. But not anymore! I will be proud of my little contribution to the well-being of my bee population here. Plus my big huge veggie gardens draw them in, too.

Now I just need to invest in some bee hives and we'll be in business! There are no hives in this area. I have checked. But there are thousands of bees making honey somewhere.

I love it. How funny that this very serious and natural thing was brought up in a childrens movie. We have so much to gain in the balance of nature if we do something so simple as planting flowers for bees. The circle of life sort of thing. I did get a giggle out of it, but what a perfect thought...standing with the bees!

Life should NOT be a jounrey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, latte in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming. "WOOHOO, what a ride!"

I have found a bee keeper in my area I want to have him set up the hives and I will provide the flowers and he will give you back part of the honey as rent for the bee space. I will be planting about a cut flower garden this year.

I'd like to highly recommend that every farm girl that is capable of doing so..please plant a little patch of wild flowers in your backyard/garden area that is native to your area. If you don't have a garden..but a patio or porch inatead..please do try to plant some native wild flower seeds into pots.Every little bit helps.. Anything to help the bees..even the native species of pollinators..not just the honeybees to have a source of nectar/pollen.
Little by little each back yard/porch or patio can make a difference in helping our bees and pollinators.
~Hugs/and thanks....the bees thank you too.
