Save Our Seeds - Feed Our Future

This is the slogan of MJ's Heirloom Mavens. The Mavens made a decision early on to keep participation in this group open to all farmgirls who want to take steps to keep our food free from genetic engineering (GE, also known as GMO - genetically modified organisms) and to preserve non-GMO seeds from becoming extinct. Although we have a henhouse to help with organization, we realize that those who are not in the sisterhood would not be able to post comments there - although everyone can read the threads in the henhouse. This place was created to provide a connection for Honorary Heirloom Mavens (HHMs) to post their thoughts and comments.

NOTE: Please begin your comment with "Regarding Henhouse Topic ____________" (the name of the thread to which you're responding) and post away.

We look forward to hearing from all mavens here as we.............

SAVE OUR SEEDS - FEED OUR FUTURE

God bless -

Knowing this topic hasn't been updated in a while, I still wanted to let you know...if you're ever in the Meadowview, VA area (near Abingdon, VA), Barbara Kingsolver and her husband, Steve...but can't remember his last name...have a general store and restaurant. The store has all hand crafted by local, regional artisans and crafters and the store uses food that's local and regionally produced. Both are housed in old buildings with lots of character.
And, if you get that far...come across the mountain and visit me at Thistle Cove Farm -smile-.

? for your farmgirls re. Heirloom Mavens blog...would the owner of the blog, please, consider putting a Follower section on the blog? I'd like to follow and it'd be nice to have the Heirloom Maven blog follow me, and others, as it helps spread the word. I've had people visit followers of my blog and sign up for their blog; sorta like that old shampoo commercial -smile-. Actually, the reason I like having followers is I don't have to remember where to go because I enjoyed their blog. Remembering is becoming an impossibility anyway -smile.

And, how about an "about" on the Heirloom Mavens blog; there's really nothing there to show visitors what it's all about.

I'm not being negative, just trying to be helpful; sure hope it's taken thataway.

LOL Cheryl - don't worry about the learning curve, we can all learn from each other. I get overwhelmed easily but gardening to me is the most relaxing thing I can do - it is all a learning process, just try not to take it all on at once.

Dawn, I couldn't respond to your post for starter kit suggestions since it was on the bulletin board so I'm putting it here. This is the link to the page where Annika posted her beginner's pack ideas: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=24908&whichpage=17

Hey, Ruth, I put a post in the AVM HMBC thread earlier today. Just looked and there were no comments so I'm wondering if I jumped the gun. How do we do this, TS?

My DH doesnt like onions or tomatos and I love them both. He will eat it or burry it under horseradish or something. Sometimes I make things the way he likes just because. And most of the time I make things without telling him and he wouldnt know if there was something in there he didnt like!!!

I have a suggestion. The better lookin we get fgrom eatin good should be enough of a kick in the pants to get them to eat better! Better yet, let him make his own dinner! Just kidding. Make what you want and if he doesnt like it, he'll put cheese on it or smother it in ketchup!

Just wondering if anyone has started the discussion on the first two chapters for AVM~ I didn't know if I missed it.

**Badge Alert** I want to join in on the Farm Kitchen badge~is that the correct title?~ I will be keeping a journal. Teresa Sue can you add me to the list?

Dawn~Like you I have used Bisquick quite a bit.

Any suggestions for those of us whose hubands are not too happy with these changes and dont' want to participate in this new eating plan? My husband is a junk food lover. He has made some changes~no more soda and he drinks water.

Lillian~I would like some of the seeds that you offered in the "Seeds for the Taking" post in the henhouse. I don't have anything to trade. Could I send you some money instead. What do you have available, if any? I would really like the Jenny Melon.

This is all I remember for now. I will come back with more if I remember it.

I have been reading AVM. I love it. I also have Gardening with Heirlooms on hold at the library. I think I just need to pick it up.
I can't wait to start and hear what everyone else thinks.

Thanks Teresa Sue,
I just happen to have both books that I got from the library. I may end up buying them, but I like to borrow them first to make sure it's worth spending the money on. I really think the Gardening with Heirloom book is worth it. It's a very nice book. I sometimes forget the henhouse has more info so thank you for the reminder. :)

Brenda we are starting Mon the 13th of October. We will read and discuss two chapters at a time for one week. Our second book will be Gardening with Heirloom Seeds by Lynn Coulter. Please take a peek in the henhouse for more info.
Warmly, and glad to have you!

WOW!!! This AVM book sings my song. :o) I'm liking it!! The library lets me keep it for 2 weeks and then I can renew it once. That should give me plenty of time to finish it. Thanks Karen for adding me to the list. :) When exactly do we get going on this officially?
