Posted - Sep 10 2008 : 10:32:48 AM FOOD~ Most of us know that we have animals that every year are placed on the Danger of Extinction lists, but did you know that there are lists of foods that are in danger of extinction as well? If you wonder why there is a new energy around heirloom seeds and foods, it is because we are losing so many great foods to genetically modified foods...MaryJane offers so many great learning opportunities about this in the Sisterhood with her book lists and more, so if you are looking for a reason to join the Sisterhood, this is just one GREAT one..And now with winter approaching, you will find a little more time to read as you prepare for next year's gardening... you can also check out www.slowfoodusa.org But I cannot help but wonder how different that list might look if each of us farmgirls found something on that list and committed to planting it, saving the seeds and passing them on... ha.. and earning a badge or two in the process.......really? endangered food? I don't think I want that on my watch!

Posted - Aug 31 2010 : 12:11:47 PM Yeah, since learning about hybrids and the terminator seeds, I have a really, really tough time knowingly planting any hybrids in my yard. As in, I want to be able to at least have the option of saving my own seed. Which I've done for the last few years. :D Heck, even this year where I barely got anything planted but have an awesome crop of weeds? I've gotten coriander seed (cilantro bolted last year), sage seed (my 2yo sage set seed), lettuce seed (well, that I planted, barely, and just ignored it, whoops), and something else. Plus I've managed to even glean some asparagus, raspberries, and now blackberries with a few strawberries thrown in for fun back in July. I love things that live year after year that are hard to kill. :D
My more-religious-than-me neighbor was telling me of the same kind of deal from the Bible two or so years ago (after I'd already jumped on the heirloom bandwagon). But she just can't convince her hubby to give up the Early Girl and Ace plants that they buy.
I'm busy, hanging in there. Alee, welp, our house still hasn't sold, so if you're rolling through the area, my kids could probably wear out your girl in regards to playing. Just give me a holler. Started "school" about a month ago. I hate to call it school because it's more fun for the kids and nothing like the school I did back in the day. Although granted, I kinda planned it that way to keep their little bodies moving/busy and keep them interested. The babe is 6mo and just about ready to start crawling, oof. Oh, and it's canning season... already gone through 130lbs of peaches and 50lbs of nectarines. Have another 140lbs of peaches on it's way here, and I have 200lbs of pears in the den ripening up. And it's not even apple time yet. Gotta feed this family somehow though. ;)

Posted - Aug 31 2010 : 08:17:29 AM Hi Ladies!
I just had a thought. So here is my thought-
In the Bible, God gave us trees that bear fruit which contain seeds to produce more of their kind, and herbs of the Earth that produce seeds to produce more of their kind and he said it was Good. So does that mean the so call "Terminator" seeds that are manufactured so that Farmers can not save seed and plant the next year are against the work of God? Food for thought...
So even if you don't believe in the Bible, I think it is interesting that even ancient humans understood that "Seeds to bear more of it's kind" was critical and "Good". So whether the words are actually from a diety's mouth or just ancient wisdom- I think it is interesting that someone from that time would look at the Terminator seeds and say "That is NOT Good."

Posted - May 15 2010 : 5:04:07 PM Wow Lanna - you have been busy, no wonder you haven't been around. Too funny about the baby on the toilet - best laid plans:) Long distance is no fun - we have done it a bit and never liked it, but I didn't have 4 little ones. What does your husband do? Amy Grace

Posted - May 15 2010 : 3:54:07 PM Currently north of CdA, hubby's been working in PDX since November. Long distance sucks. As does a softening real estate market here, and exorbitant prices down there. *sigh*

Posted - May 15 2010 : 2:57:45 PM Sounds like you are VERY busy! Wow Lanna!! Congrats on the new baby! If you are still in Idaho in August we should stay in touch as I might be driving/flying up to see a friend. How close are you to Moscow and which direction are you moving? It would be fun to have another farmgirl sister in Montana! ;)

Posted - May 15 2010 : 2:20:51 PM I've been busy. Basically a single mom of four (6.5yo, 4yo, 23mo, 3mo) since hubby's working 400 miles away. Add in trying to clean/pack to get our house on the market (still!), sort of homeschooling, the garden (at least to make it pretty enough to show happily and me digging up enough stuff in pots to start the next garden wherever I land), and day to day stuff, yeah. I need four of me. If you want to come up to help or know someone looking to buy a great little suburban homestead up here, let me know.
And for something fun, my little one was born at home as planned, but on the toilet. Which wasn't exactly planned. Heh. So far he really digs water, so go figure.

Posted - May 14 2010 : 11:02:32 PM Oooh, that orchid is beautiful!
I love pretty stuff that's hardy and that I can ignore (like, oh, say, our lilacs, lilies, rhubarb, raspberries, apple trees, and so on - I'm in the weird camp of letting Mother Nature prune when I don't feel like it).

Posted - May 12 2010 : 8:50:19 PM Barbara Kingsolver's book "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" is a great read. On the cover is a photo of an heirloom bean called the Christmas bean - a beautiful red and white striped lima-bean-sized bean. They're yummy. This is my first time on the forum and I know that I will be back. |

Posted - May 12 2010 : 09:19:53 AM I agree! I want one so bad. My horse barn owns two islands where wild grasses grow and the islands are undisturbed. I wonder if they would give me some to plant as a restoration spot. It makes me sad that such beautiful plants just cease to exist with out a huge uproar. I need to buy some land so I can just plant it full of endangered species!!

Posted - Apr 27 2010 : 5:06:11 PM I know, crazy, right? I wish I could get seeds for it! I can just imagine when this was all tall prairie grass dotted with beautiful white orchids. I am going to try to contact a preservation society about these flowers as I think I have a perfect place for them to be planted. I would have to talk to the land owner but it runs wild and is an island most of the year
