In looking for new homes we were told to look on www.familywatchdog.us to find any sex offenders in our new area of looking. I was surprised at the number of them. You point on the dots on the map and a picture and address of that person pops up as well as what they were convicted of. I wish it would add when they were convicted and how many times but I found it was up dated daily and includes information like were schools are in location to them. I hope this helps keeps our kids safe.

I agree with much of the info about how varied the term "sex offender" is listed and have had a few friends whose sons turning 18 were almost labeled for life by this for dating their 17 year old girlfriends with fathers who did not like them. The goverment really needs to better define the label.

Thank you for posting the site though. I was abused for many years by a few people when i was very very young. This is the first site I have seen these people listed on, even with photos. They are people deserving of this label and i am so happy to see them finally listed.

If you are caught peeing outside, (man or women, trying to be discreet as possible, no bathroom avalible), you will be charged as a sex crime and have to register if convicted. These will also show up on those websites, and they don't always tell you what they did, so make sure you know the truth, i.e., check with local law enforcment, cause some people are too quick to start a witch hunt, and people have been hurt and even killed...

Yes the megans law website is ran by the government, has nothing to do with hearsay and people passing on info, it's about what the state has in their database of criminals that have to register.

I have also found out that most of these websites have listed many people who were never arrested or convicted or even accused of anything! The Attorney General for my state has been lobbying for them to be made illegal and have criminal charges brought agianst them for not verifying the information they contain.

There have been 5 cases in my state where an angry ex-spouse has put a name and address on them for their ex to get even for something in the divorce. It took a lot to track down the originating email to the site, but then the ex was charged, BUT NOT THE SITE!!!!

If things could be changed to allow charges on these sites for improperply posting such info I would trust them, but until then, keep in mind that most of this info is only hearsay sent to the person who runs the site!

Exactly. We should never be in "fear" of our neighbors. Knowledge is power!

One of the hardest things I had to do after checking our local offender website was to tell my little girl and little boy that only two houses down and across the street that a sex offender lived there. I mean the last thing you want to do is scare the beejeebers out of your kids. But, I wanted to make my kids aware of the fact and to steer clear from that particular house. And, I also showed them his photograph.

Kids grow up too fast as it is, but if you have an offender in the neighborhood it's best your kids know what to look for.

In Illinois you can go to the State police website and there are very accurate and up to date records of the sex offenders in this state. So if you live in Illinois, check it out. You will be surprised at the number of offenders in your town. I sure was.

May God bless those who love the soil,

I understand you, Julie and when working with probation and parole on a case, I learned about many of those types of cases. In fact my old neighbor's son was a couple weeks from beening 18 and his girlfriend had just turned 17 but her parents didn't like them and he was charged and tried as a adult and though he is 25 now it has ruined his life to be a registered sex offender and a felony on his record. But on most of these sites you can see their charges if they are with children or under certain ages! It is good for our safty but also have a open mind, age when convicted of crime and how it is written. It is such a scary topic, it wasn't talked about much when I was younger but now it seem it's happening more than ever. I didn't want to offend anyone, just want everyone to be safe as possible.

Hey,
I hope that nobody thinks I'm advocating for rape of women. The situation I was describing about an 18 year old boy and his girlfriend was about consensual sex. The law considers that a crime, but is he danger to the community? My husband when he was a senior in high school had sex with his girlfriend who was not yet 18, and is generally considered an upstanding citizen. What I'm saying is that there very few shades of gray legally in a matter that should have lots of them. Age of consent can and should be an area in which there are shades of gray. In recognition of these realities, there are certain jurisdictions that have "close in age" exceptions because they realize it is not that cut and dried.

Well I checked out watchdog.com and found that it only had 2 of the 3 offenders we have where I work. So it isnt all that accurate for my area anyway.

I work at a police department and we keep sex offender records. We have to keep current photos, fingerprints and addresses on all of them and they have to check in every three months and let us know when they move or face going back to jail. Most are true sexual predatora and a few are not in my own opinion. Some departments here list their sex offende's residences on their department web sites. We dont have a web site here however so we dont do that.

Our state has a different web site that you can look up anyone who has been incarcerated here and see what they were arrested for. It will also tell you if they are on probation and how long their sentence if for. Most of the time they have their mug shots as well. This is great if you have the name of someone your concerned about that you want to look up. I personally use it as a tool at the police department for research but anyone can use it.

I doubt this is something every state has though.

I have found on this site most information is accurate, everyone on this site has been found guilty in a court of law, no matter what they guilty of the law saw them as a sex offender, true not everyone on it has molested or had a crime toward a child, but some are rape of women not children in my view we have to watch out for not only our children, but ourselves! In our county we have a website and so does the state police to look up offenders on it! good luck to you and be safe! I had to help put a neighbor back in prison that was already convicted. It was not what I wanted to do, but a child was being hurt. Sad how so many people have to hurt in this way!
Juliekay Posted - Mar 26 2007 : 06:49:42 AM
Yes Julie there is a lot to consider when looking at these websites. A "sex offender" can be an 18 year old having relations with his 17 year old girlfriend. A "sex offender" can be a 16 year old boy looking at porn of 16 year old girls. Is that a predator who would prey on a child? Highly doubtful. Just unfortunately caught up in the fervor of protecting children against evil strangers, when statistically they are more likely to be abused by a family friend or relative.

I don't know who runs that website, but I found the information was not accurate for two towns in my area. I am in favor of being aware of who our neighbors are and protecting our families with knowledge. I would think the local police office is a more reliable source of information, or could direct you to a database that is kept current in your area. I do appreciate your desire to help us all ...some information is better than none.

We make a difference.

Please keep in mind that sites like these list individuals that may not REALLY be "sex offenders" Police are required to report individuals who have been arrested for domestic situations as well which could be something like fighting with a family member. If you are really interested in who the true sex offenders are you really need to contact your local police department. They will be able to tell you more specific information the level of offence.
