I was opening a jar lid one day and was really struggling with it, so I decided to try something different.
When you want to take the lid off, take a bottle opener and put it under the lip of lid and lift up until you hear a pop. You can then open the jar very easily.
I have learned that to have a good friend is the purest of all God's gifts, for it is a love that has no exchange of payment.

I have to pop the seal on the lids before I open them, too. I use a butter knife under the lid to get it to pop. I have arthritis in my hands and can't open them until I do this.

My husband does this crazy thing where he slaps down hard on the lid with the flat of his hand and then it opens for him. Generally I just use a rubber band around the lid (because I don't have one of those rubber disks) or the butter knife thing around the edges like my grandmother did, or the run it under warm water thing. But lately I just yell "Man!" and my husband knows he has to open a jar for me.

If you don't mind a little noise, you can take the butt end of a butter nife and smack it around the edge of the lid. It should break the seal and you'll be able to twist the lid right off.

I usually use the pointy end of the bottle opener to pry open the seal, like Darlene first suggested. I love how easy that is. But sometimes it doesn't work so well, so I just break the seal by quickly smacking the bottom of the jar with my hand - not super hard, just with a little force. I'm afraid to bang it on a hard counter because the counter doesn't have any "give" and, like Brenda said, you could smash the glass if you're not careful. My hand, being a bit softer, works just fine. Just don't smack it too hard with your hand, that's all. I've used the rubber grip that goes under my cutting board to twist off the lid in a pinch, too. :)

Prying with a can opener or a spoon scares me a little as I am always afraid of breaking the glass and getting glass shards in the food.
I've used CindyG's "whack" with a screwdriver or butter knife handle. I will sometimes turn the jar upside down and holding it at right angles, bang it quickly down on the counter. It's important not to do it at an angle for the same reason - broken glass. Just the force of the "whack" will often loosen the seal.

yeah those rubber disks work too, I had one lid recently that I had to beat on. It was too narrow to get anything in to let the air in so I couldn't turn it so did have to whack on it some the next thing would have been hot water.
Most of the time they open for me.

I've done that! A fork or knife work as well. There are also rubber discs you can get at Dollar Tree that work immediately as well. |

Yes wacking it is hard on it and you. you can use anything that fits under the lid and let you lift it up to get the popping sound.
Then it opens.

I'll have to try this spoon method. My way of doing this task is much less gentle - I hold a screwdriver by the shank and give the edge of the jar lid a good whack with the screwdriver handle.. If you do it right, you get that "pop" sound that announces the seal is broken and the lid comes right off.
The spoon method sounds much, much safer! |

Yes spoons work well too, I think that I used the bottle opener because that is what fit under the lid at that time.
It is so easy once you get the lid to pop and it just twists right off.

Sometimes if you run hot water over the edge of the lid, it will pop right off.

The gloves are good, but if you don't have the strength, and your hubby isn't available, try the bottle opener lift up technique

That is a great tip! I will put on my rubber dishwashing gloves to open jars too, whenever my hubby isn't around to help.

Try it on your next spaghetti sauce jar, you will see what a difference it makes.
I was trying one time to get a jar open and with tapping on the lid with a knife and using rubber jar opener I saw a bottle opener or anything that would fit under the lid and lifted it up and it popped and it opened right away, sure saves your hands doesn't hurt anymore to open a jar.
