Reading the poison ivy forum made me want to share one of my home remedies. When you have a splinter or thorn stuck in the skin after working in the garden, place a small piece of bacon fat on the splinter/thorn. Cover it with a band-aid for a few hours (I usually sleep with it on). When you take the band-aid off, the splinter/thorn will be on the bacon fat. My children love this because I don't have to dig the splinters out. This works like a charm.

Scotch tape, there's a new one.

Try using scotch tape. Put it over the splinter and pull it off, it should work painlessly unless it is a splinter that is deep into your skin.

Pretty neat ideas! I'll have to try some of them next time I get a slinter.

Those are some great ideas! My dd and I are always getting splinters for some reason.

If you have to remove a splinter from a child put some oral gel on it and it will numb the area long enough to get it out.

If I get a small splinter that is just lying side-wise under the skin.. I will wash it, put some antibiotic cream on it when I first find it and just let it grow out. As long as it is NOT hurting.. when the bottom layers of skin form, it pushes the top layers up and off..and the splinter magically disappears one day. (One of the TV doctor shows also stated this a few months ago.)

BUT if it is in and hurts -- or points downward and is deep.. I douse skin and tweezers with antiseptic, (or mom used to burn the end of her needle to "sterilize" -- I will just use alcohol if I have to dig).. and take it out.

I haven't had to actually remove a splinter in years and years.

I use the sharpest needle in my sewing box and dig it out, using only as much depth and pressure as I absolutely need. It's almost never pleasant, but pretty much foolproof. I love these other ideas, though, and will remember to try them next time I get a splinter. Thanks!

Thanks for the tip, I just usually let them fester out though. They don't bother me to much

I'll have to try that next time I am cutting wood and get a splinter. Thanks for sharing.

If you need to remove a bunch of small splinters, try a peel off facial masque. This works on cactus spines too.

I once removed a splinter by pouring hydrogen peroxide on it. The bubbles just worked it out, it was pretty neat and painless as well...it doesn't work on every splinter...only the ones that are still sort of sticking out of your skin.
