When I started my Magazine subscription the one thing I noticed was all the "postcard inserts" for subscribing to MJF's magazine. Then there are all the renewal notices that start coming 6 weeks after you just started receiving your subscription. This got me thinking. . .
MaryJane did so much work on having the magazine printed on recycled paper, promotes all the positive things we believe in, encourages us to re-purpose things in our lives . . . maybe it's time to eliminate all the extra "waste" and help save a few extra dollars in the process. I love being able to check online to see when my subscription expires, being able to renew online, call if I need to, send in my payment by mail, etc. I for one would love to "give back" a little, just think of how it would help her. . . Other magazines are "taking the pledge" to eliminate this waste. . . I think we should too.

What do you think??

I confess I was one of the ones who renewed my MJF way before it was due because I thought since I received a renewal notice then it must have been time. Then I figured it out and decided that I am throwing away all notices until it shows up on my calendar. I have already written in when it is time to renew so will know when I receive one to look in that month of that particular year. I started out with a two yr subscription and renewed for 2 yrs so I am good for awhile. I am going to double check to make sure the renewal date is actually correct since I should be good for another 3 years. It is confusing to those of us who don't remember exactly when they subscribed.

O, a trouble's a ton or a trouble's an ounce,
Or a trouble is what you make it!
And it isn't the fact that you're hurt that counts,
But only--how did you take it?

And it's kind of a scam, in my opinion. People will rack up years and years of magazines from following the advice of those cards and the "THIS MAY BE YOUR LAST ISSUE" envelopes.

Starbucks and sushi to green fried tomatoes and corn pudding-I wouldn't change it for the world.

I am glad to hear others feel as I do. Although they are getting a good response from the postcards, I also feel having 4 or 5 in each issue is a bit much. Also, receiving all the "time to renew" letters just days after you renewed . . . and they come continuously until it really "is" time to renew is extremely wasteful!

My mail carrier probably hates the number of magazines I subscribe to. I also dislike receiving all those postcards blown into the magazines. Martha Stewart is particularly bad with having two covers on her magazines sometimes. What a waste. I must get five or six quilt magazines, Martha Stewart Living, MS Food, This Old House, etc. They all are after me to resubscribe after I get my first issue. I just renewed my AARP dues and they cashed my check (yes I write checks) and sent me their new membership card. Before you know it, I received notice to renew my membership again. I sent it back with a very polite note about all the waste they are making, not to say the fact that they are always asking for donations.

That's my story.

I am going to use the insert to make templates for sewing/quilting.

I understand that you receive tremendous response from the inserts but do we really need 4 or 5 of them in one magazine?

Hi Brian,
Thank you for the update. It is nice to know your receiving a great response from the inserts. I will go "manage" my renewal information to stop all the excess mailing of invoices!

Hi Joanna,

We do offer a way to manage subscriptions online so that you can avoid the mailings. If you go to our Magazine Page and click on "Magazine Customer Service" you can log in by entering the info from your mailing label.

In regards to the inserts for the magazine. We receive a tremendous amount of response from the inserts. Both for new subscriptions as well as people renewing and purchasing gift subscriptions. I really like the idea of using the inserts as seed packets. The durability would be fantastic.

Thanks,

~Brian

I agree there are ways to use them, good idea for the kids
I have used them for seed packets as well as for fire starters.

I would rather all magazines do away with this wasteful practice, the ROI for the insert cannot be much compared to the waste.

I believe that there was information somewhere that she plans to eliminate the insert cards. If not, there are many ways to recycle them:

-kids can practice writing on them, remembering address etc.
-use them for bookmarks ( a teacher at school does this for students)
-give them to kids for playing mailman or post office

....just a few ideas anyway

Happy to be a "Raggedy Ann" in a Barbie World!

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.
