This year in Georgia squirrels have been extra destructive, at least at my house and my mom's. At mom's squirrels ate all of her Christmas cacti which were originally my grandmother's. Solution: my step dad shot the squirrel. But at my house in the woods, there is a much larger population of the pesky critters. They keep eating my hostas to the dirt and anything else I have potted on the deck. I did put pinwheels with metallic "blades" in the rosemary growing in pots, and that has seemed to be a deterrent. I would really like to start square-foot gardening next spring, but the number one step in my plan is how to deal with these varmints. Any thoughts?

Metter is less than 100 miles from here. Next time you make a trip south let me know and maybe we can meet up somewhere. I will check on the hen house and all the other info. Too cool!

Blessings,

Carol, we just had a get together with MJ a few weeks ago in Atlanta. Darn! You need to join the Southern connection. It's in the Gathered Up section. We are going to have a camping weekend NEXT oct. 2011. You need to come. Karrieann is in charge. You can also join the henhouse. Let her know and you can be a part of all this.

We also need to go ahead and plan a Ga. get togher sometime this fall at a central location. I would love to meet more of the Ga. farmgirls.

Chickamauga, is right outside of Chattanooga Tn. south of it a little ways. About 30 miles from my house. I am in Tn. half the time it's so close. I'm sure my hubby's been to Waynesboro. He's a truck driver. My parents live in Metter, which is near Statesboro.

Hope to see you on Gathered Up and in the hen house!

Hi, Kristin, we have six dogs. They are great at killing armadillos, but so far have only killed one squirrel. They do try their best. With all the suggestions I'm getting, I'm sure I will find the perfect solution by spring.

Waynesboro is about 30 miles south of Augusta. I just posted this weekend somewhere that it would be great if the membership roll could be listed by state. I see Georgia girls posting all of the time, but I don't know how close we are in real life. Wouldn't it be great to have our own Mary Jane get together? Where's Chickamauga?

Hi Carol. I have a bunch of cats and a dog that will kill anything that comes in this yard. I have never seen a live squirrel here. I like them but after reading what you are going through, I'm glad I don't have them here. I have seena few dead ones around but that's it. I hope you find a solution to your problem soon.

Where is Waynesboro?

Thanks to you both! I'll apply this farmgirl wisdom next spring and let you know how it turns out.

Carol, we have always had a squirrel issue. One of the ones in our neighborhood even has "attitude" and will sit on the phone wires clicking its teeth and waving its paws at you, giving you the wherefore. (Oh the stories I could tell!) Last year, they got into my corn. It broke my heart and I vowed I'd find a way to keep them away this year or pull an Elmer Fudd on them! One thing that I read is that if you plant your corn with cucumbers and/or pumpkins, the nasty little varmints don't like to mess with the prickly vines. It works! We actually had a pretty good harvest of corn this year - and no squirrel has come near them! I know it's not much, but I hope it helps you next year! - Nini

I get dog hair from the local groomer and spread it around in the garden with heavy spreading around the outside. I also have a few hair salons that keep human hair for me and that gets spread around too. You have to add fresh every month, but it works well here.
