As you are making your own toothpaste if you don't have essential oil, break open a mint tea bag. You get the flavor and smell, and probably already have the tea on hand.

Here is another recipe
Ingredients:

* 6 teaspoons baking soda
* 1/3 teaspoon salt
* 4 teaspoons glycerin
* 15 drops peppermint or wintergreen extract

Directions: Mix thoroughly. Should be a tooth paste consistency. Store in a container. You'll be surprised with how fresh your mouth feels.

From MaryJane's Ideabook:
1/2 cup baking soda
1/4 cup fine sea salt
1 tsp myrrh powder
drops peppermint essential oil

I never found the myrrh powder so left it out and used the tea bag instead.
