If you need to start seedlings early, cut a TP roll in half and fill with dirt. You can tie four or so together with twine to help them stay up right. You save those plastic containers and reuse those rolls that gather.

Maybe some of you have seen this or its been mentioned before but as we start getting excited about planning this years garden you might want to start saving those TP rolls.

We have 24 kids that come to our Wed. afterschool program and we'll be starting seeds in the next week or two. I've been saving tp and paper towel rolls for awhile now and I think I have enough. I've also put in a request at church for deli style clear clamshell boxes that the kids are going to turn into mini-greenhouses. The kids are starting a community garden at the local community center where we meet. Each child will have a 5x5 foot plot to plant whatever they want. If it will stop raining for at least 3 days in a row I can get the gentleman who agreed to plow up the spot to come and do it!

Great idea! I had heard of this before, but never tried it. The pic is a great help. I've been saving mine for weeks but they keep diminishing as my two DD keep using them to fashion tunnels for their hamsters.
I also use tp rolls for years to keep cords coiled. They're great for keeping my mixer cord and other applicance adaptor cords neatly separated, untangled and quick to grab.
Blessings!

I just started saving mine a couple of weeks ago when my friend told me about this. Of course I have a while before I can start my seeds so I should have plenty. Heck I am pretty sure the people in my house eat the toilet paper as fast as it goes!

I'm glad so many folks are taking an interest. I know I can't always come up with pots to gets plants started and this is a great way to reuse something we all have.

In case you don't have a stockpile of TP rolls, you can buy them from Oriental Trading Company. You can also use paper towel rolls. Sadly, we've got about 6 weeks to go before we can start seeds, here, but thought I'd pass this on.

I did this this past spring...except I left them whole and cut for slits in the bottom and folded them in to make a bottom and then filled with soil....worked great.

I have used tp/ papertowel tubes for three years. They work great and yes you can plant whole thing in the garden.

I love this idea! I usually give the empty rolls to the gerbils to chew up, but I think their toilet paper tube days are over!!

This is so cool. I was saving them for the girl scouts, but know I will be using them as seed starters for me. they might get some IDK. Also neat idea for cord corralling.

Well holy cow! Daddy would have LOVED this idea! I bought a couple packs of seed starters and several of them just did not work... Either I could not get enough dirt in them or they held too much or too little water. Using TP rolls, I wouldn't waste the money on the paper starters! And, unless it's scented toilet paper (made that mistake ONCE) I don't see why it couldn't be planted and help nourish the soil afterwards!
