Are you prepared? I have in all the rooms, including the bathroom, a candle with a book of matches. The kitchen, living room and upstairs sitting room have oil lamps as well. A flashlight at the head of the bed and one right next to the telephone are always at the ready.
But what about the basement?? Never gave it a thought until yesterdays turn of events left me standing at the far corner without any light, no flash light was handy . . . not even a match.
So today, I will outfit the basement with light sources placed in the "easy to get to" locations for the future.
How about you. . . are you ready for an episode of complete darkness?

Oh I love your idea for the cooler!! Now that is a great one, we all need coolers. . especially when the lights go out! LOL!!

That is such a good idea Jo!!! I try to think "outside the box" a little bit for wedding gifts...or housewarming ....like a cooler with summer silly dishes packed inside for a summer wedding, or a pot and soup making supplies for a winter wedding, pumpkin carving stuff for an early fall wedding and like that. I will sure remember the emergency supplies ...how fun...you can make up a cute box of supplies for that!

We have emergency supplies and are prepared for most of what gets thrown at us. We can have wind gusts up to 65mph, be snowed in for a week or more, temps as low as minus 40, flash floods and more.
The generator is a must have along with the emergency radio that gives us alerts on the above, a pantry full of food that does not need to be refridgeration is great and the basics like firewood, water and extra gasoline for the generator, matches, etc.
The one thing I have noticed is, those of us raised with these things in our lives have them on hand now as adults. . . those who where not, are surprised by our preparedness and want to know how to do the same and what they need to have on hand.
A great gift to a new couple is the beginnings of their emergency supplies! Something I have done for as far back as I can remember. The fun part is the phone call that comes at some point in time letting me know they "needed that stuff"

Yep. I have old oil lamps and candles in each room..extras in a kitchen drawer and in the linen closet. I even have an oil lamp down in the cellar. I thought of it when I was down there one day and the light bulb burned out. Hmmmm....took care of it right away. Put a couple old chairs down there too. It would stink to sit on the cement floor in the dark.

Joanna, Living on the Texas gulfcoast we try to be prepaired. We have oil lamps and flashlights and in the kitchen we even have one of those lights that plug into the wall and will go on if ppower goes out. When Hurricane Ike hit us last year we had no power for 13 days. No water either except for the water I always keep handy for such emercencies. One gallon per person a day. We also bought a generator before the hurricane hit us so that help the fridge and the food.

I like the emergency lights, that is a great idea. Also like the thought of leaving a flashlight hanging on the door knob. (Although around here that would not last very long.) Isn't it amazing how dark it is when there are no street lights, only stars??? Unless the moon is up, you cannot see your hand right in front of your face!

If we arrive at our cabin after dark, it is completely dark out - nothing but stars, so it's difficult to make our way around to light lanterns etc. We always leave a small flashlight hanging on the inside door handle of the front door so we can grab it when we go in and have some light to at least light laterns with.

I have the type of flashlight you keep plugged into the wall it acts like a nightlight also. My DH put up a light that if the power goes out the light comes on and floods the kitchen with light. It's so bright if the doors are open it lights up the bathroom and our bedroom. So far it came on only twice, It was so funny as it only came on in the middle of the night and we couldn't shut it off.

LOL!! No, not an inspiration. . . just a farm girl stuck in a dark basement!!!
We loose power on a regular basis here in the mountains. Ice storms, wind, hail, thunder storms. . you get the idea. I simply got tired of someone using a flashlight and not returning it to the proper spot or finding it with a dead battery. Hmmm, time to invest in one that you shake to charge it up. . . anyway, wanted others to have a heads up so your not stuck like I was!!

Probably not as prepared as I should be. Thanks for brining that to my attention! You would think with all the ice storms we've had I would be more on top of this, but I'm not. Will take care of that asap!
