We had a terrible fright on Sunday. My 5 year old son was playing by our library window with the u-shaped cord for the mini-blinds. We don't know how exactly he did it, but he wound up with the cord around his neck & his weight made the cord snap as he fell off the couch. He got a very serious rope burn around his throat from the cord. These types of cords were outlawed in IL because they act like a noose. I'm furious with myself for not cutting this one like I did the others. I thought it was too far away for him reach, but he proved me wrong. If anyone has these types of cords in their windows, please be sure to cut them in half or better still, replace them! We are very thankful our little boy wasn't more seriously hurt, it was a very terrifying lesson for all of us.

Oh my goodness! I'm so glad your precious son is alright. Poor little guy, he must have been scared.
Makes you wonder why they are still making this type of product. When we had these blinds in our last home, I cut the cords too so the kids couldn't get hurt. Made it a real pain to operate the blinds, but it gave us peace of mind.

Thanks to all of you for your kind words. Tina, I'm glad you told me about the mini blinds, I'll make sure we don't buy any when we begin replacing these awful vertical blinds. We moved here 7 years ago and these window treatments were left by the previous owner. This house has been one disaster after another, so we could never afford to do much redecorating, but this incident has bumped them to the top of our priority list.
My sons neck is healing, he has a scab across the rope burn the cord had given him. We are praying it won't scar him.

one other thing about blinds is kids can actually stick their heads in between the slats on the blinds..this too will choke them..I had to rescue a little boy many years ago who had gotten his head stuck betweeen the slats too and couldn't get out.I'd recommend shades or curtains with sheers behind them instead.
p.s. glad your little boy is o.k. though.

Dawn, Hoow scary! I'm sorry that this had happened . A hard lesson learned. I'm hoping that your little son will be o.k. We never had bllinds with that type of cord, but I always put the cords up high on a hook on the frame of the window. I still do this with my granddaughter. I'll pray for your sons rope burn and hope that there is no damage underneath on the tissues of the throat.
