Hi Girls,
I need some lotion for my hands!! I am not a glove wearer and my hands
are always into something. I clean for people and waitress so my hands are showing some wear and tear. I know there are those of you out there that make it and I would be happy to purchase from you but I am not sure what would be the best. Any advise would be much appreciated. Toni

I'm partial to cocoa butter. I use it most of the time. I do use shea butter, that's another good one for me. Cocoa butter is the only lotion I can put on my face. Guess we all have to find the right lotion for the skin were in!!

I have to second what Donna said about considering supplements - After years of dry skin I started taking vitamin E capsules and it helped a lot - I can also crack one open and rub on my hands if they do get itchy.

Also, if you apply something topical, I find it works best right after a shower - it locks in the mositure while your pores are open! Good old fashioned bag balm has worked great for me!

My hands are so dry in the winter, like CJ and others I have a horrible time. But I use O'Keefe's which you can buy online at Lehmans. I put it on then put on white gloves that you buy in the drugstore before I go to sleep at night and it is wonderful. I had a very cracked thumb and within a week the crack was "mended".

Toni - I hate gloves too - latex makes my hands break out in eczema and plastic makes them dry out. I wore neoprene garden gloves once last year and had the eczema show up but even with the regular cotton ones I usually end up taking them off. That said - I also have really dry skin on my hands due to lots of dish-washing, climate, etc. I have used the Burt's Bees Farmers Friend salve which works great and is similar to some other handmade ones I've tried, but I find it too greasy to use unless I'm putting gloves on and, well, you know how I feel about that. I have had the most success with a lotion that contains 20% Shea Butter that is made in France - European standards for cosmetic ingredients are much stricter than those in the US so, while this is not an organic product, I feel pretty confident that it will do me no harm and the shea butter works like magic!! You can get straight shea butter from different sources here in the states too - I just really love anything french:)

Hey Toni,

My hands get very dry in the winter I like to use a sugar scrub with sugar, olive oil and fragrance. It really makes your hands feel smooth afterward

My fingertips used to split (near the nails) I put a dab of raw honey there and then place a band-aid on it before I go to bed, it really does work for me.

Mara, thanks for the advise, but I truly dislike gloves, I am one of those people who
even forget to wear their gardening gloves until it is too late. I will have to try that
comfrey salve it does sound great.

Toni, is there some reason why you don't wear gloves when in contact with cleaning solutions and hot water? Is it just too much of a bother when you're going from sink to taking orders? If it's at all possible, you really should protect your hands with good waterproof gloves, with a soft lining to make them soothing to your hands and make them easier to remove. Otherwise, over time, your nails will become more susceptible to weakness, splitting and bacterial infection. All the lovely products already mentioned would be good to use -- Suzanne's Comfrey Calendula Salve sounds especially wonderful -- but nothing beats prevention!

I also love the idea of exfoliating with sugar before using hand cream. I used to do that, using a little honey with the sugar. I'll try it tonight before I go to bed :)

I've had long term issues with skin that peels and cracks. Being a nurse it's made worse with hand washing and alcohol preps. I found after a very long time of trying to fix it externally that mineral deficiency can be a big part of it and fixing your inside helps fix the skin. For me, magnesium (topical and by mouth)and taking colloidal copper helped it turn around in a few days. Everyone's different but it's something to look at.

Elise,
In just the past few winters I started having issues with my thumb, index finger and middle finger on my right hand developing cracks around the fingernails. I'm sure it's mostly because of having my hands in and out of water, cleaning stuff and such all day in my work as a caregiver. As soon as I feel a crack starting I use "NEW SKIN" liquid bandage that you can brush on like nail polish on them. It has antiseptic in it and seals them up. That's the only thing I can do at work! Then at night and other time when I'm not having to be in and out of water, etc. I use Bag Balm and bandaids on them . . . this works really well for healing at night while I sleep.
I also use Bag Balm on my feet with light socks at night when they get dry and cracked.

AND, I also use Melody's WHIPPED SHEA BUTTER on my feet the same way . . WONDERFUL!!!! Her product is great!!

My hands get so dry... They usually don't get bad till later in the winter, but they are bad now! My thumb and one finger just crack and it's tender to touch so it's hard to get things done. My hands hurt too much. I've started wearing rubber gloves to do dishes and wear gloves no matter how short my trip outside is. I have some lanolin I can put on the cracks, but that only helps after the problem has started. I need preventive stuff! I'll check out you gals who sell lotion. Otherwise it's gonna be a long winter with sore hands.

Lotion bars seem to do the trick for me. I have sensitive skin and have had no trouble with lotion bars. Great for winter dry legs, heels, and elbows too.

Sounds like there's been lots of good offers here. What talent!
I have a number of dry skin remedies on my website including my Ponderosa Pine Salve and Comfrey Calendula Salve. My herbals are natural with no synthetic scents, colors, preservatives or petrochemicals. And I wild harvest and/or grow all the plants in my formulas.

Mothersdream, great question... I was wondering the same thing in the back of my mind. Anything we make is up for scrutiny that way. I myself know I have reactions to a lot of things, so I would not think of blaming someone else if I had a reaction to their product... but I am curious to know how to deal with people who would!

I have to admit... I've become desperate before. I'm the cleaning lady of the house, so I'm constantly washing dishes. I LOATHED the dishwasher, so I do it all by hand, and my hands HURT they get so dry some times. I had a tube of A&D ointment on hand for minor injuries and one night, busted out the tube and used it on my dry hands. It's mostly lanolin, which most people hate the smell of, but I am partial to. It did the trick for me! I forget about bag balm... may try that on my heels!

For those of you who sell your home made lotions and so on, what do you do with customers who may have a reaction to an ingredient? I make my own, but I've not been to keen on the idea of selling anywhere but locally and to friends I know.

My DD has moved back to Australia where it seems like everyone has "eczema". Any great tips for something to soothe it - or better yet - get rid of it? Her hands break out like crazy.

Toni - we have several talented gals here who make products that would be great for your hands. I don't make lotion but make lotion bars and an herbal skin salve. Any of the products that use natural butters and oils would be great. Especially olive oil, shea butter, mango butter, beeswax. I like the lotion bars and salve because it provides a protective coating for your hands and stays on through several hand washings. Something I would recommend before using the lotion bar or salve is to exfoliate your hands to get rid of dead skin and smooth rough places. You can do this by mixing sugar (you can use salt too but if you have any cuts it will burn) and a little bit of olive oil in your palm, rub onto your hands making sure to get between the fingers and around the cuticles, rinse, then add the lotion. Your hands will feel like silk!

Hi Toni!

You are right! Lots of us do make some great lotions. I make some, as does Kay (The Rustic Cottage) and Dalyn (QueenofQuiteAlot). I am sure I am missing others and for that I apologize.

I created my lotion when I cleaned houses and mucked out stalls everyday so my hands were chapped. Mine is more of a balm- thick and a little goes a long way. It has Beeswax, Olive Oil, Vitamin E Oil plus more. I am re-vamping my website, so I currently don't have online ordering. It should be back up in the next day or so.
