See pg 2 for even MORE ideas!!! ...and of course a picture!

As a commited recycler I am always looking for a way to reuse something that still has life-in some form.
If you're like me, your kitchen hot pads are grungy after only a few uses. It seems such a waste to toss them out- but equally as offensive is the appearance of being dirty- even fresh out of the wash!
Today I had a brainstorm!
Rather than start from scratch on new hot pads I simply recovered my old ugly ones!!!
Seriously- all I did was pick out a few scraps of fabric , turned it right sides together and stitched up the raw edges- an envelope cover!TWO seams and voila!
*It needs to fit snugly to be safe*
BEFORE you stitch up your old ones be sure that any thin worn out spots are mended and padded.

This set of 3 took me a total of 15 minutes!!!

What a great idea to use those selvedge edges!!!!
I have tons of them but only use them to tie up bushes etc.
Great idea to crochet them!!!!

You could also use old coat linings to insulate hot pads.
I quilt so I have a lot of fabric and I always take the selvege edge off the fabric, right? Well, I roll it up into balls and I crochet dish clothes out of it, wears like iron.

Thanks! I love the idea of recycling worn-out dishcloths. I have several I could cover, and it would be a fun excuse to crochet some new ones.
DeepsouthMamma Posted - Dec 03 2008 : 5:24:09 PM
I've heard there is a heat resistant batting- coated with something I guess.
These are just recoverd ones that I purchased and wore slap-out!!

The dishcloths were so thick that they seem to be perfectly insulating- I would use a heavy outer fabric just in case. Also if there are holes or thin spots repair them before recovering.

Autumn

Question. What can you put in a hot pad to insulate it? I burn myself a lot.
DeepsouthMamma Posted - Dec 02 2008 : 8:13:02 PM
Yeah -I made it to be a hot pad- its actually thicker than the hot pads I am recovering.

That is very clever! If it was thick enough it could be a hot pad, or one of the pads you place on counter tops/tables to keep hot pans from burning things!

Awesome! I am going to have to start doing the wash cloth one. I have some my great grandma gave to me and I just don't want to throw them away. So I will have to do that!
Thanks for the creative ideas!

OK here's the next idea!

I crochet dishcloths for my kitchen and I LOVe them!!!
After a few months the lighter colored ones start looking really dingy

So I decided these all COTTON thick cloths just couldn't be tossed to the trash can yet- even if they do look bad!
So- I stacked and basted them together, using scrap cotton from the fabric stash, on the top and bottom.

Then I made the envelope cover, just like the others-

Finally after fitting the cloths inside the cover I machine quilted the design using a walking foot on my machine.
The quilting keeps them from shifting and moving and I think it looks great!!!
**REMEMBER- use natural fibers* wool,cotton- preferrably from sources of re-use.Old coats, jeans etc.

Autumn, you are so clever. What a fantastic idea!
Thanks so much for sharing. I believe I'm going to jump on the bandwagon and do it also. I might put a pocket on one side to make a sort of mitten. I hate those bulky pot holder mittens that you can't feel anything you are picking up in.

That's kinda my philosophy- but I am really bad about thinking there is still life in something when truly it is time to throw it away!
Show us some pictures if you gals re-do your hot pads- I'd love tosee them!
I am going to work on some wool ones today I think.
Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Fix it up, Wear it out, Use it up or do without!! This is a saying a former pastor of mine always said and every time I go to throw something away I always say that first! If its worn out and beyond fixing...then it can go!! Thanks for one more way to conserve and be responsible for the things we've been given!

What a great idea... Just keep in mind that some synthetic fabrics will melt when exposed to heat. Or burst into flames.

I love the seasonal fabric! What a great idea. You could even ad a bit of velcro on the inside of the new cover and make seasonal/interchangeable covers! (i guess as long as the velcro would hold up)
They are really pretty. I love the festive pumpkins the best!
