I used to designate a whole day to cleaning - and it wound up being the ENTIRE day. Now I clean ONE room per day and I have the rest of my time to do as I please and the task isnt so daunting anymore.
This is my schedule:
Monday:bedroom(s)
Tuesday:living room
Weds: Dining room/laundry room
Thursday:kitchen
Friday: bathrooms
Sat:Tidy upstairs
Sun: free

makes my life a lot easier!! I do 2 rooms that are pretty easy. Example, my dining room is an easy clean so I do 2 rooms that day. A

That use to be the story of my life, but now I clean up as I mess up instead of letting things sit and turning into a big mess for me to deal with later. Also as soon as I have enough clothes to make a load I wash them instead of just doing all the clothes on Saturday and it taking all day.

Flylady is wonderful! You can follow her routines while you learn to set up your own. BTW - FLY stands for "finally loving yourself".
She's amazing.

Anything we can do to keep our households sane is alright by me!

Personally, I no longer have the time to keep the house as clean as I'd like, but that's mostly due to working overnights, then being the only one at home to take care of the chickens, geese and dogs (and garden, and house, and and and). Marcy mentioned Fly Lady, and I've used one of Fly Lady's tricks to at least get a little bit done each week day: pick a chore, and set a timer for fifteen minutes. Work for that full fifteen minutes. I find that once I get my backside "into" what needs doing, I'll finish the task whether it's within the 15 minutes or takes longer.

Kim dear.... I have felt that way for the last 6 years. I was wife, lover, mom, taxi, chef, maid, nurse..blah blah blah..... then my mom passed away and one thing I remember her saying was "dont get so caught up in making a living that you forget to make a life". After she passed I started to let things go. So what if I have a pile of dishes in the sink.... I had a good run with the dogs. Who cares if the laundry isnt folded? I got to sit outside and read a book. I am no longer worried about the little things... cobwebs, vacumming. Life is short and I intend to live.... make peace with your dust bunnies sweetie and fly!!!

Dawn, I love that idea, I am weird about keeping the house cleaned as well, but I work F/T, try and exercies, make dinner, run my daughter here and there for her school stuff, and my own fun things, I ususally have to give up a whole day of my precious weekend to get the house done, buy groceries, etc... I think I will start grocery shopping on the way hoem from work on one day, clean different rooms on the other days and have my Sat and Sun for quilting, sewing, etc....I would have to wonder, after readfing these posts, why do us women feel we have to be super women and 'do it all'? any answers please???

That's a great idea! I need to start doing it like that...I always feel so overwhelmed doing it all in one day.

Thanks for the inspiration Dawn! I definitely want to get more organized about cleaning. The one-room-a-day seems like it might work for me. I'm pretty good about picking up clutter and definitely feel more calm when the house is tidy, but I am definitely not great when it comes to the nitty gritty cleaning, like dusting, windows, and floors. Ugh. But I want to be better, honest :) At first I thought maybe I would organize cleaning by task, like dusting one day, floors another. But, I think I'd have more success following a schedule like Dawn's.

I found if I can remove the things I seldom use to a higher cupboard or out of site my livingspace & kitchen counter space sure looks tidy.
My daughter-in-law has a huge closet in her bathroom that has shelves. My son took off the sliding doors and she lined the shelves with those clear plastic shoe box size containers filled with items and labeled each box. It really helps me here while I am visiting & helping out with the new baby. His shelves in his room are als labeled and man its nice...

I have always had a problem keeping my home clean. I was one of those stay at home moms who was never home and when I am I like to be outside doing farm things. Things have begun to change in our home lately though. We started homeschooling and now we are down to one vehicle. I guess the Good Lord decided it was time for me to stay home more and get my home organized. We are working at it daily. Right now I am trying to clean up the clutter several times a day. This is kinda what we have been doing.
Get up and go feed
come home and eat breakfast
Do a quick pick up
start school work
Have lunch
pick up little mans toys in his room and put him down for a nap.
Continue school work
get supper started
Do a thourough cleaning before dad comes home and when the little man takes a nap. I have my DD clean bathroom, and den and sweep the two. DS cleans living/computer and hall and vaccums both and everyone helps in kitchen. THen at night we do it all over again quickly and I am the one who sweeps and sometimes can mop depends on how tired I am. I feel so much better waking up to a simi clean home in the morning and it has made everyone feel better. I actually don't mind if someone drops by unexpectedly. Not to say we do this all the time, but we are definantly getting better at it. The Good Lord started really convicting me of it lately and I hope that I can continue to improve.

There is no other life for me, but farm life.

Having a schedule does make things easier. Have you ever heard of the Fly Lady? She organizes things so that they are easy to accomplish.

Thank you for posting your schedule. I fully intend to give it a try. We moved to a two story farmhouse from a two bedroom apartment and I feel like keeping my home CLEAN is something I cannot get a handle on at all.
I barely keep it somewhat maintained and clutter free. I'll let you know how it works for me!!

I'd love to clean your house. Although I have to admit, I dont have kids in the house anymore. Dogs yes. Kids, no, so the cleaning is usually after myself as I am a "trailer". you know where I am in the house by following my trail!!

Geez Dawn, can you come to my house?
I am actually a "clean freak" I think it is my dyslexia, but I cannot function if things aren't in their place,(and I love all things to have their own place) so why God thought I could handle a hubby and 4 boys is beyond my way of thinking. There are few things that make me as happy as a clean home.. matter of fact one of my favorite things is for my hubby to take the guys out of the house for a day and let me just "nest" giving me enough time before they get home to just sit and "take it all in", then when they get home we pull out the board games and just sit around the coffee table all night.. that is my perfect day :)...
