I watched a couple of shows on green building today. I am really interested in some of the new things they are coming up with. Especially with the new green community that is a subsection of Portland- the South Waterfront. Also they are putting water turbines in free flowing rivers to harvest water energy without damaging fish habitat.
Some of the houses they were featuring are so well built and well insulated, that with a few solar panels they have a 0 energy bill each month, and some even get paid by the power company! How cool would that be?
I get the Sundance channel and they have this show call "Big Ideas for a Small Planet" I really enjoyed it because it was showing how people are actively getting these earth saving ideas into practice!

I like the denim insulation that is out there. It is recycled.
I would like to get solar panels because down here in Texas, we have so much sun. I wonder why no one around here uses them. With as much sun as we get, the costs should offset within just a few months.
I know my neighbor put up a clothesline in protest to the neighborhood association. She can't afford her bill, so she wants to lower them anyway she can. Her neighbor is joining her. I think it is great!!!

Wow that is so good to know!! We live in a drafty old house and one of our projects this year is to insulate but I have this instinctive dislike of insulation. I know the spray stuff is bad and the regulary stuff smells like cat pee - that can't be good. I will check this out, thanks Alee. |

Yes, Alee. I agree with the insulation. I live in an older home, and am starting to do that very thing. I didn't know there is a soy alternative. Something worth checking into!!!

Hi Kate!
I am all for big companies jumping on the 'green' bandwagon because, like you say, if someone (or everyone) changes one or two small things- it can make a great impact. My husband, Doug, and I have been talking a lot about what we would like to do building wise if we get to build our own house. If we don't get to build our own house, I plan on re-insulating any house we do buy. I know there is a way that you can punch small holes in the sheet rock and put spray foam insulation in all the walls. There is even a soybean spray foam insulation that seems really promising. I have heard that as much as 75% of a house's heating and cooling can be reduced just by proper insulation.

Alee,
HGTV is revealing their Green house later this month.
I think personally, they are kind of jumping on the Eco/Green band wagon. But then again, if you can get someone to change a thing or two to an eco friendly choice in their existing house, and educate someone, then that is cool, is it not? Think of the impact if people just changed one or two small things.
It is better than nothing.
I have been trying to convert my friends and family, to more eco friedly alternatives, and it is tough.
I broke down and ordered cable, will have to see if we get the Sundance Channel.
