My sister used to live in Maine where they lost power pretty regularly. They would like one of those old style lanters that use oil and close off a room. With blankets covering the window and a door snake or a towel pushed under the door, you can keep a single room warm with just one lantern. Just remember to open the door for a few minutes every few hours when you burn a candle or lantern in such closed off conditions. Flames use up the oxygen we need! :D

Brrrrrrr! Glad to be here! But I would like some snow, please. It's a balmy 44 out right now. Windchill has to be shaving more than a few degrees!
Our house is, well let's say we'd never have to worry about carbonmonoxide poising....We are so full of little, untraceable gaps here and there. We still have loovered windows in our closet, livingroom and bathroom. Talk about not being airtight! AND the original section of the house is insulated in newspaper from 1935, the year they built. Someday we will tear the walls off and start over. Until then, it's put another log on the fire! Good thing we have a decent supply of wood, although if we keep burning at this rate... Maybe it's put another sweater on my body instead of a log on the fire!

It was 14 below here last night...brrrrr. It is supposed to snow more tonight..it will warm up then. Our old house is SO poorly insulated that I lantern wouldn't warm our rooms for sure..we have really high ceilings too, which wouldn't help. I am SO thankful for our woodstove..it warms up our family room and kitchen at least toasty warm...not the whole house, but enough for us to be warm. Gosh..I am sure glad to NOT be in Fargo tonight!!! I was there about 30 years ago.

The otherday Fargo, ND was -50 with windchill. That is so cold even electric and gas furnaces have a hard time keeping up!

Wow - that is hard to imagine. Even here in Florida. I do not think our oil lamps could keep our living room warm, but then our house may not be as well insulated as the ones up north. That must be it. Now if we had our fireplace going, and blanketed off the room....then we could stay warm. And I have thought of that before! It does get into the twenties here and lower.
