Hello! I have been making my own laundry soap for about 6 months now and love it! I was looking at the recipe on page 47 because I need to make some more and loved the idea of making it up in a large quantity like the one given. Thank you so much! However, the recipe I had before was a 2:1:1 Ratio with Boraxo Hand Soap 2 cups, and 1 cup each of the Borax and Washing Soda. This new recipe has strikingly LESS of the Boraxo Hand Soap by proportion. Is this new recipe as good as the old one? Could it be a typo? I'm just checking in before I make up a huge batch, I hope you don't mind.

Alee you are amazing! Thank you so much! I'm guessing with all the HE machines like mine, they really REALLY don't need the suds. I gave up on the liquid for now and am going to try the powdered for a while. I just can't get over how much money we are saving. Thank you so much for all of your help!

JoAnn I am so sorry to hear about your reaction! That sounds absolutely miserable! My husband has an allergy to Tide as well (I know many people who do in fact). But my husband hasn't reacted at all with the homemade laundry soap thank goodness. I hope you don't have to deal with that reaction again!

AlyssaMarie- I find MaryJane's recipe to be a great one. The soap is really there to help "make water wetter" or so my high school chemistry teacher put it. It lessens the surface tension of the water and allows it to slip between the fibers of clotehs better. I have found that many recipes of homemade laundry powder overdo the soap because people expect to see bubbles or something.

JoAnn- I can certainly understand your fear of borax. You could be sensitive to it. However I do want to share something that Nora's allergist pointed out to me when she developed a rash about a year ago when I ran out of the homemade and had to use store bought for a while. He said that if your skin is already in a compromised state- such as yours was from the Tide Cold Water- an innoculous substance that you have never had a problem with can become an irritant. So what it sounds like to me is that maybe your skin was having a rough time and a change could have made it worse. *hugs*

I had a concern with what I thought was 2 much Borax. A couple years ago I broke out in a rash and couldn't figure out what I did to cause it. I had been using Tide Cold water and then they changed the formula to Tide Cold water 2x concentrate I think it was called. I googled that and there were tons of pages complaining about the concentrate and people breaking out in a rash SO I started to make my own using washing soda 20 Mule train and I think a bar of grated soap. This worked great UNTIL I needed more and I didn't have my usual bar of soap and did find a bar of boraxo. Little while later I got a horrid rash. I then googled borax and it can cause a rash so I think I overdid the borax. Then when the itching got so bad I tried a homeremedy which I had a horrid reaction to and finally went to the dr.( I Never go to the dr). It was very painful and I couldn't sleep. When the nurse saw my arms she said "Oh I'm sorry!" Well the good news is the rash is gone and I'm using Dreft now kinda afraid of borax now. JoAnn
