Last week, my bulk order of chilimac and red pesto pasta came in. This week, I've been bringing the chilimac to fix at work since it's my absolute favorite MJF product. You would think that the word "organic" is synonymous with "poison" the way people shirk when they ask me what I'm eating and I tell them "Organic chilimac." They then want to know why in the world I would eat Organic because that just sounds disgusting....then I have to explain and I just get "the look." I mean, I know I'm weird and all but I just don't see why people are afraid of organic food. I think it's wonderful! I wish I could buy organic 100% of the time! What I don't get is people making faces at my delicious chilimac and then coming back with so-called chicken from McDonald's! Grrrrrr......

Okay, I'm done venting now! Back to eating my chilimac.

I think people are ignorant, and associate organic with hippie types.
I know a lot of people look down their nose at me that I buy organic when possible. I just laugh at their ignorance, and go about my business. If they want to eat over processed/refined to death crap, let them.

Wow!! When I hear organic, the first thing I ask is where did you get it? People, honestly, are just silly sometimes. I also think they may tend to think organic= elitist or something because all the "snobby" people tout organics and charge an arm and a leg for them. Or you get the above mentioned "hippies" weird look. That is ok with me- more organic for me to eat!! YUMMY!!!

Cheers,
Heather

My family thinks of organic as "dirty hippy food", eaten by fringe weirdos... heehee...I'll never change them, so I don't try anymore, but it is fun to slip them something organic and have them rave about it =P My dad doesn't care so much any more, he's just glad to have me do the cookin' when he visits.
There is little in the world to compare to an organic, sun warmed, home grown tomato....*drool* YUM!!!!
How can people eat the overly processed glop that they do and call it food???? ICK! I eat organic as much as I can afford and plan on growing, entirely organic this year =D

I think a lot of people want their food to be 'clean', ie. packaged from the supermarket because everyone has been told to be afraid of all the germs and bacteria.(I hate all those 'anti-bacteria' products everywhere but that's another thread, lol *grin*) I had a co-worker who wouldn't eat my organic veg last year because she had seen me grow it in the ground - with dirt and eek! compost.

Jen- Exactly! Organic _doesn't_ taste like cardboard! In fact, science proves that organic tastes better with more of the natural flavors compacted into each bite. Yummo! What you grow will only taste as good as how healthy the soil that it is grown in :D

Wow Di, your ending question really makes ME think...and we live very naturally and eat as much organic as we can. Around here, I get "the look" because there seems to be some "snob appeal". Oh, you're one of those...too good to eat regular food like the rest of us? I almost want to say "Yes, and healthier too!" Oh well, instead I go right back to eating whatever it is that suits me at the time. Everyone must live with the choices they make for themselves, and these are our choices. P.S. Organic does NOT taste like cardboard!!! P.S.S. I wear a recycled braclet from www.imorganic.com and all it says is "I'm Organic", if I'm made of organic matter...why shouldn't my food be?

I've found those that will knock organic fall into two groups...those that think they might have to actually cook instead of opening a can and those that feel it is a hippy-associated fad. "Organic" is something I am very passionate about, not only for our health and well-being, but more so for the health of our planet. So far I have yet to find anyone who can answer my question, "Tell me one thing that makes organic a bad thing?".

Isn't that too funny?! I bet if you had just said "Chilimac" they would have been asking for a taste!

I think they are afraid that it will taste like cardboard or something, which we all know is so far from the truth with our lovely MJF food!

Probably for the same silly reason my mother wouldn't eat anything with "pesto" or "cumin" in it...she thought the WORD sounded yick.

She finally figured out that Pesto is really good--once she knew what was in it and I made her eat it.

People really ARE afraid to try something different, and frankly, to most folks (including my husband), organic chilimac takes all the "good" out of chilimac. He would think I was eating some kind of yogi tofu type something...organic is synonomous with hippy dippy no flavor food with most of the people I've talked to...

i have wondered about this too.
i have always been drawn to organic and healthy ways, because as a child i grew up in a refinery town and somehow knew that things were going on that were not healthy.
i think, rachel if you look at the history of non-organic farming and food production you can get some of the answers to this question.
a long time ago, i read a book called "diet for a small planet" and it really made me aware of the politics and economics of food.
you might enjoy the read!
i do think that organic farming is labor intensive, and contrary to the kind of farming that has been pushed on america since WWII, and to look at organics does require folks to look at more than just farming.
thanks for posting this interesting thread and i hope more folks will jump in with their thoughts.
i do think when you choose to shop organic, in general you will be more likely to support small farmers, mom and pop farms and if folks dont want to engage in the health issues of eating organics, people might be interested in knowing that your choices are supporting american farmers and that you are doing your part to help local economy.
if not they just might not be ready. ...but i have to say, i applaud you on your choices.
and i bet your chilimac is delicious!

i think that some people relate organic to "the dirt is still on it." i have to tell you, i'm totally agreeable with the thoughts on organic and have tried, or should say, started to alter the way i live. i'm trying to bring this household back to nature, so-to-speak. the problem i have though, is where i live, the closest farmers market, and some of the vendors that advertise organic produce, well...a lot of their stuff does not look real good. now, i don't think i'm that fussy, and i realize that i'm probably not going to get a giant, perfectly green, bell pepper (for instance) unless it's been genetically pumped up and has a ton of pesticides on it. however, a lot of the stuff that has shown up where i live, is tiny and looks like it's on it's last leg. i keep purserveering, but i'm "going organic" due to thinking that i don't want chemicals in my body rather than thinking that the food looks better. maybe they have pictures in their minds!?!

I suspect people overreact to the word organic because they don't understand it, don't want to think about something new, etc. Our world is so large these days and we get so continuously bombarded with information , not much of it very encouraging, I'm sure it is easier to just shut off certain new ideas. Especially if they require a little extra thinking, a little investigating, etc. I avoid looking at news on television and filter when I can what I need to know to keep semi-alert to the situations in the world I need to pay attention to. I am an old hippie, and I'm still trying to figure out exactly when our country went srtaight to thinking that money is the end all be all goal to aim for. It's a mystery to me how people don't want to take on any new information or learn about things that might benefit their well being. Enough of the old lady rant, I too am considered weird, such is life....Karin
