This is a pic of a nest in Winesburg, OH in an Amish community. I was reading the other post about the little Dove who lost her nest and eggs and thought of this pic.
We were picking up some dump truck beds and the mother bird (what is an official name for a mommy bird??) had built a nest in one of the beds. We couldn't take it with us cuz we knew it would blow out somewhere and thought 'maybe' if we set it close by, the mother might go ahead and hatch the eggs. She probably didn't as it had human scent on it but I thought we ought to at least give it a shot. She just had the bad luck to build in the wrong spot, poor thing...

Hi!
Just some info. I have volunteered as a wildlife rehabilitator for a while. The idea that a bird will abandon a nest or young because they have a "human" smell on them is a myth. Most birds have a terrible sense of smell, and the nest, etc. will still smell more like the birds than you, anyway. So, it is also fine to put baby birds back in the nest. If a bird abandons it, it will be for other reasons, not the smell.
Interesting fact-that is why a major predator of skunks are owls-the smell doesn't bother them. A biologist told me that if you smell skunk, but it seems to be coming from above you, look up-it could be an owl that got skunked!!

I am always amazed at how blue a robin's eggs are!
Hopefully the momma bird went back to the nest. I think some birds are more sensitive to the human scent than others. Hopefully she is a practical type bird :)
