I was looking for my two posts the one on Annie and the other on the owl. Both are gone along with most of the other posts. Looks like Brian has been cleaning house again. Thanks for keeping the forum up to snuff.
The other evening about sundown I spotted the owl in my neighbor's tree next to my back fence. I watched him for about twenty minutes and he didn't move. Annie was in the backyard but wasn't aware of the owl, but after awhile she did see the opossum under the tree. Annie charged the fence and the owl flew off. I had to brave the 20 degree weather to see what Annie was barking at. The opossum was playing possum. It was a pretty good size opossum so I guess the owl never could make up it's mind whether he could handle it or not. I finaly got Annie in the house and left the opossum still playing possum. As far as the owl I hope he found something more to his liking and he had his supper.

We have seen a few eagles here. In our previous home there were many nests and those areas are protectdd. You can't build a certain distance from an eagles nest there.
I have heard an owl here but have no idea where it is. Usually night or early morning.

Sara, we too, have big ole owls here, they often keep my hubs up at night hooting! We've seen them in day light as well a few times, which I always thought was out of the norm for them... we have a small dog, our neighbor does too, so we often keep look out for each other when they are stirring during day light hours. I'm always worried one will snag my little fur baby and haul him off for a Chiweenie treat... we love the wildlife our area brings, so we don't usually try to deter any of the wildlife, but we do keep a watchful eye.

I hope nothing is wrong in the nest!! Daytime sitings of owls is not common for me at all. I hear them frequently at night and often they are seen in the trees if I am up early and outside.

A little after eleven today I saw the owl flying from branch to branch in the oak tree across the street from me. First time I have seen an owl during the day though I hear them often around noon. Could it be something was bothering his nest?

I also didn't know that about Eagles. We have Eagles here in Florida around the lakes with wooded areas. They are majestic to watch.

Sara - I didn't know if eagles paired for life or not so I did a little research. Looks like they pick a mate for mating and if they both return to the same spot year after year they stay a mating couple. They don't spend all their time together though. And if one of them doesn't return to the mating spot then some will find a new mate. I didn't know that!

8:30 this morning I saw an owl sitting on the electric pole next to my driveway. He was way bigger than the one I saw the other night. He flew to the large oak tree across the street from me, so he is the owl I usually see. The owl who was checking out the opossum may live in the tree in the next yard.
The owls I hear sound more like a weird bark than a hoot. I heard them long before I saw them and thought it was a little dog with a strange bark.

I heard an ole owl hooting this morning on the way out to the barn. Sometimes they can sound kind of eerie. Hope yours is still around Sara.

I would love to hear the owls! We have a couple eagles but I haven't seen any owls. Probably a good thing with all the cats we have LOL!

April, I guess most birds and wild critters carry some sort of virus and pest like fleas, lice, and ticks. I like having the owls around to keep the rats away. Haven't seen the big black rats this year but for the last two years they came in from the trees below me and got into my storage shed.
I hear the owl that lives in the oak tree across the street from me and the one that lives in the next yard's oak tree talking to each other around noon. Sometimes I hear the owl southeast of me talking too. Never see them out in the daytime only hear them at noon.

Those owls can be pretty brave & stubborn, we have them here as well. My fur baby is small and I'm always afraid Big Bird (the owl) is going to try and snatch him up one day. My hubs was out throwing rocks at one of our owls a couples mos back, he just perched himself on the tree limb and stared my husband down like he just knew my husbands aim was not on target! Thank goodness no opposums here, but we do have rock chucks, although they are cute, they are messy, multiply like bunnies, and carry virus so we usually try and chase them off. Stay warm, Sara!! xo
