I just went out to put them to bed and B.B., my favorite little hen got up off the nest and is walking around with what looks like the membrane part of the egg hanging out of her rear. The yolk part of the egg is in the nest with no egg shell. Do you think the egg has broken inside her? What should I do?? She's my favorite and follows me around like a dog. Any help is appreciated. Lu

Lu,
Did you pick her up to see if it was a soft shell egg hanging out? Make sure she hasn't prolapsed(Her insides hanging out).If they are they will have to be put back and most likely would it happen again. If the egg did break inside there is chance of infection. But in both cases I would call a vet if you think it is serious. If you think she didn't have the egg break inside you could just wait and see.If it was just a soft shell you can try some crushed oyster shell, so she can get more calcium. Unfortunately I haven't had luck rehabilitating prolapse and had to have them put down. Good luck and let us know how she is.

I just checked on her and she is as feisty as ever! She laid one normal egg, and it looks like another egg formed without a shell, and it was expelled. She's 5 1/2 yrs old, and still going strong, so I was worried when I saw this mess coming out of her and in her nest. Whew! Now I can sleep tonight! Lu
