We have a german shorthaired pointer puppy (8 mo.) that we are planning on breeding later on. When would she be going into heat for the first time? Anyone breed dogs and have some advice on how we should go about things?

Oh She is beautiful. I grew up with black labs and just love them still..although I always have bassets..can't resist those sad faces I guess.

The American Kennel Club has a website and a lot of information on breeding dogs..........e.g. how old? what kind of clearances you need? a lot of helpful information. Check it out.

Eight to Ten months in the norm for that size dog. Larger breed dogs can wait till they are even 18 months old. Just like people, some girls will come early while others are slower. Looking for the natural signs works best and I have talked with many breeders who say that they wait two cycles before breeding. You can then track them better and the dog is ready for motherhood. Yes, thank you for all of your info. We got Scout from a very reputal breeder, she is registered with the AKC and I want to do this the "right" way. I have a call in to our vet as well so that he might be able to send me more info. I was not planning on breeding her until she was at least 2.5 or 3. I understand they make better mothers if you wait until they are a little older.

I have a hairless chinese crested and her first heat was when she was 15 months old. The vet said that it was completely normal and that we could breed her at her second heat. And the check that Tracy is talking about was done a routine vet visit for shots on my dog when we started talking about breeding to our vet. Good luck.

She's not too young; most female dogs will cycle the first time prior to a year old. Six months is not uncommon.
Before breeding, you're going to want to make sure she's not passing on any degenerative issues. Most big dogs will have their hips, eyes, heart and elbows checked. Eyes can be done as young as your girl is, but hips they need to be at least two years old.
IMO, it's very important to do these things. It comes off as snobby to some, but there are so many backyard 'pet' breeders out there and far too many dogs in shelters as a result. You'll get more money for your pups if their parents are screened ahead of time, and you won't be labeled a backyard breeder.

I had a basset hound go in heat for the first time at 6 months!! Yikes!! We weren't planning to breed her and waited for the heat to be over to have her spayed...I always get my female dogs spayed before 6 months now. Until that experience I didn't know how many male dogs could be in ONE neighborhood...haha.
