Posted - Jan 10 2021 : 5:28:05 PM I have been working on my Farmgirl's Best Friend merit badge recently and came across this poem about the "Blue Heeler" (the Australian cattle dog developed for droving cattle over long distances across rough terrain):-
Blue Queensland Dogs Lex McLennan
The story of their coming perhaps some grey-beard knows, As through the years forgotten their line of breeding goes; But where the bushland saga in horsemen's gear is dressed, The brave blue dogs of Queensland are treasured east and west.
Scourge of the mountain scrubber, bane of the mulish steer, The terror of the wild dog, who hunts the homestead near; The guardian of the children; and when the daylight wanes The comrade of the lone man who camps upon the plains.
Not once or twice it happened that when a good horse fell And left a battered rider where he alone could tell, While staunch mates raked the ridges and sought him far and wide, A brave blue Queensland heeler kept vigil at his side.
The good blue dogs of Queensland! The pals of sunbrowned men. Who bring the range-run bullocks to yard and trucking pen. And southward to the Murray and westward out to Perth They bless the great grey northland that gave the blue dogs birth.

Posted - Aug 01 2021 : 4:40:08 PM Cindy, thanks for sharing this poem. When we got to visit Ireland a few years ago we got to visit a sheep farm where their Australian(?? I think this is the correct word) Sheep dogs round up an entire herd of sheep alone. It was amazing to watch! The owner says that the dogs hate it when they have to have a day off to rest. Beautiful and brave they are!

Posted - Jan 11 2021 : 03:35:04 AM Cindy loved the poem. Here in Texas we call them Austrian shepherds where they are much loved. My sister's Molly was rescued from the animal shelter and is now happy protecting Betty's farm from coyotes and other critters.
