I am not sure if will affect any of you but did you all see the big list of dog/cat canned food recalls that had put many animals into kidney failure? I have copies of the list if needed.

Several years ago my son did a science fair project on dog food. Holy moly! What a bunch of gross stuff is put into even the "good stuff". His hypothesis was to check 10 dogs and give them the opportunity to eat from any of the selected foods. The one they normally got was also in the group. Not a single dog choose the food he was normally fed. Weird huh? What did they all gravitate to? The food that had the highest percentages of fat content. Hmmm....none of the dogs liked the foods that listed ingredients like chicken faces (I kid you not) or "poultry feet". Oh the poor things, what ARE we feeding them?
I heard a vet on the news say last night that making your dogs food would be too difficult to meet their nutritional requirements. I was not at all convinced until he started mentioning all the micro nutrients that we wouldn't be adding and that disgusting as it seems they are getting raw elements that have been freeze dried, etc in their food that "cooking" would break down. Yikes! Just glad our dog's food wasn't on the list but definitely a scary situation I wouldn't want repeated.

FYI, I think it's a good idea to take a good whiff of your dog food when you open it......... 2 years ago we almost lost our lab Sophie to hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. We traced it back to her spoiled dog food. "California Natural" was the brand that we had bought. I'm not sure if the packaging had allowed spoilage or what and we had been very happy with the food up until then but she hadn't wanted to eat it and had known it wasn't okay but we kept dosing it up with goodies thinking she was just picky. We took it in to our vet and he thought it was spoiled as well. I suppose any kind of fat in food can go rancid and cause problems with your animals.

We feed solid gold now that it vacuum packed and find it to be wonderful! You're never sure how long things are on the shelf up here! jo

p.s. Our dogs eat alot of salmon!

Wasn't this all due to a different supplier of the wheat gluten? I bet they do it by lowest bid sort of thing to save money. It is pitiful that is what it is.

it's a damn shame. It just shouldn't be, people lost their beloved pets. Gets harder & harder to know what to trust anymore w/ people & pets.

I started doing research on pet foods some years ago. Corn and corn gluten are poor uses for filler proteins. The better sources are specific meats listed in the first 3 ingredients. such as beef, bison, chicken, lamb...ect.

Animals in the wild (be they felid or canine) don't eat corn. potatoes or many other starchy fillers we do. I started my animals on all natural diets. So if the listing ingredients aren't something I can easily recognize or would want to eat myself, I don't bother.

Interesting how a local talk radio host had us tune in to Susan Fixton (was hard to catch her last name) just last week. She is the author of "The Truth About Pet Food". Might be worth checking out.

Also, she cautions about the corn and wheat/glutens more due to the Aflotoxins they harbor when wet. Strange how this mold affects most animals except pigs.

Lets hope you Mary Jane's gals out there haven't sufferen any unnecessary losses!

The ones you have to worry about are the canned ones and the goopy packets. They're manufactured in China. The dry is manufactured here. Not like that's any safeguard, but it's a distinction.

And it's weird to see brands like Eukanuba and Iams from the same manufacturer as Ol' Roy. I have no doubt that the recipes differ, though.

We feed Natural Balance dry too. Sweet potato and fish. Blecch. I probably don't want to know what all is in it, but dogs will eat cat poop if they have a chance, and I don't want to know what's in that either.

For what it's worth, I was told today that Costco's Kirkland dogfood is actually Eukanuba.

My dog, who we sadly had to put down last month, got basic dry Purina every day of his life, except when he got table scraps. The symptoms they are publishing sound exactly like what happened to him, stopped eating, frequent urinating, vomiting - but the Purina is definitely NOT on the list. These symptoms could possibly be another whole range of things, as well. I hope they find whatever toxin it is that is in this food, and fast.

You know, it is not just dog food where it seems that we have a wide array of choices, only to find out that there are only a few manufacturers, but the difference is in the branding and marketing of each product. It takes a problem like this to make it apparent.

There has been a lot of consolidation going on in the people food industry too. Take a look next time you are in the store and see how many of the products you buy are from ConAgra, ADM (Archer Daniels Midland, I think) or Kraft Foods, even if they are branded something else.

Rodale warned us about this 30 years ago! Makes it even more important to support local producers.

I feed my big dogs Pro Plan and my babies eat the Nutro puppy dry - when I do buy canned food it is mostly Alpo and I split a can in many pieces for all of them to flavor their food.
I feel so bad for the people affected by this and the pets. It amazes me how something like this can happen and hit such a wide array of foods. Scary

I am safe! Or should I say my dog is safe! We use a different brand! I hope no one else is using any of the recalled ones. Fingers are crossed!

I am so glad I feed my dog a different brand. :) I feed her Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance. Its a bit pricey at $40 for a 28lb bag of dry, but she is totally worth it and it takes her forever to go through a bag.

Here's the link, the list is huge! Hope it doesn't affect any of your pets:

Kathy, I briefly heard the news on this Friday/Saturday. I really didn't pay that much attention to it but...now I am worried. Wouldn't the dry food have essentailly the same ingredients as the wet? Wouldn't it also be manufactured in the same factory? I have a 10 yr old shih tzu who has been on Nutro dry (the one with glucosamine in it) since December...I am so scared I threw it away last night...could not stand the thought of doing anything that may harm him ... thinking of making his food (( already make his "cookies") Anyone else worried sick?
