Posted - Mar 06 2007 : 4:45:52 PM I went and picked up my Angora goats today! They are so cute! Both are white angoras.
Dinah is 7 yrs. old, almost 8, a registered white with amber eyes and is really shy, esp. around men, but she was from a very large flock(?) and was never really socialized. That will change as my friends (who are boarding the girls for us) have 4 kids. She doesn't seem to answer to her name, but will turn and look at us if we call her Didi, so that's her new nickname. She seems to like one of the girls the most, so I am hoping she will bond with Didi.
My other baby is Ruthie and she is the social one in the duo. She loves animal crackers and was easily won over with a few treats! Ruthie is almost six years old, is a color carrier with a perfect set of horns and has the most amazing blue eyes. In a few days she should have no fear of the kids...esp. if they meet her with treats!
Both have been bred before and both throw twins. I'm so excited!
Our friends live about an hour away and it was really hard to leave them tonight. I wanted to camp out in the barn with them.

Posted - Mar 08 2007 : 3:07:32 PM Erin, you'll just love your goats!!! They are so sweet and have such personality. I started with just 2 and now I'm not sure how many we have because I keep some at my parents house. Last Spring we had 5 babies in one week but four of them were sets of twins. Let us now how you all are doing ~~Blessings, Mikki

Posted - Mar 08 2007 : 3:00:31 PM When I was in h.s. we had a goat that came in the house. It was fun. Of course, we had lots of animals in the house, even a miniature horse for short periods of time (to be fed). Otherwise the full grown colt would try to steal her bottle.

Posted - Mar 08 2007 : 12:51:40 PM Kathy, I thought I was the only one crazy enough to let a goat in the house! I have a picture of our Chrysanthemum peeking out of a kitchen cabinet (doors were taken off for painting). Everybody thought I was nuts letting her come and go like that, but in abotu 4 months she only messed in doors once. I have told hubby that when I am the crazy old woman on the mountain (go to move to the mountain first) I am going to raise me a house goat. I am banking that they are easier to house train than a puppy.

Posted - Mar 07 2007 : 6:25:39 PM Erin I am excited for you and your two new friends! I love baby goats - I have Maybelline the Barnyard Queen (plain old farm goat) and my Nubian, Billy Bahh Bahh that I raised from a few days old. I am getting another baby Nubian this month and can hardly wait to hear a baby bleeting for me and holding the little bugger in my arms! Here is a picture of him when he was just a baby and still in the house hehehe

Posted - Mar 07 2007 : 1:17:33 PM I only have meat goats and 2 dairy goats. They are so precious. They really make good pets but be careful. They are goats and they will eat everything from, flowers to tree leaves and your garden. I try not to get to close to the meat goats for I know they have to go to the slaughter so I try to think of them as mexican food names. Now, my two dairy goats, they just tickle me to death watching them. I'm to have little ones on the ground in the next few weeks. Can't wait. Good luck with your goats. Posted - Mar 07 2007 : 12:16:14 PM I LOVE those names!!! I don't brush my Pearl (who is almost 4 years old now) between shearings (twice yearly) to keep her from matting..she dosn't mat really. Her fiber hangs sort of in soft wringlets. She stays fine and clean unless it is really muddy. I do tend to give her a bath outside with the hose and orvis once or twice in the summer if she needs it. They don't stay clean like dogs do..wouldn't that be nice..but not as much lanolin in their wool like sheep so it dosn't get as sticky either. YOu clean the fiber after shearing. I have always hoped to get a colored angora some day. I plan to get a little ram lamb husband for my ewes this year though, and between the sheep, Mona and Pearl the angora I am maxed out on livestock space. If I had more space I KNOW I would have more.

Posted - Mar 07 2007 : 12:00:51 PM Ruthie and Dinah are their names and I don't know yet how difficult they will be to keep clean. You might ask Frannie in TX - she has some. I'll be getting mine freshly shorn.
Or ask Aunt Jenny - Hey, Jenny - how DO you keep your Angoras clean? Do you have to brush them so they won't mat?
Now I need to find me a colored buck to add to the family! And maybe a couple of other colored does from another breeding line.

Posted - Mar 07 2007 : 07:40:25 AM Erin, Let me know how you like your fluffy caprines! I want one so bad, but hubby says they would just be a hassle (keeping the coat clean etc). I love my Nubians, but I think I would like to have a little bit of everything. Last spring, I bought a spinning wheel, but havent learned to use it yet...Hopefuly it is not going to be an expensive decoration.

Posted - Mar 06 2007 : 7:31:11 PM I'm very excited!
I also got a telephone call tonight from a lady who used to raise the colored angoras - she does only whites now, but she has ties to the State Fair and a couple of other shows, and knows many of the other Angora breeders in the area. She invited me to join their spinning group and offered to teach me how to shear.
