I've been checking for eggs once or sometimes twice a week, as I've only had one hen laying (all summer pullets) through the winter. Well, this morning I went out to find FIVE eggs! The one egg I've been getting as been a pink/ivory color...the other four today were BLUE! Someone new has been busy

The brown egg is a size comparison, as these chickens have a bit of bantam in their background and lay smaller eggs.

Because it's been so chilly out, I just went ahead and popped these into the fridge for eating. However, I'm going to start collecting the blue eggs for hatching as I'm wanting to raise blue hens that lay blue eggs.

Does anyone know how long it takes before an egg is fertile? I mean...the roos are all in with the hens, but if I were to take a pair of hens and put them with just one roo, at what point would I know for sure that the eggs they lay belong to that roo and aren't the offspring of the other boys?

Kathy, this is a mix that a friend of mine has been 'breeding', although I use the term lightly. She's had a closed flock for four years now; they're a mix of a little aracauna, phoenix and some type of bantam. As you can tell by the size of the egg, they're a small chicken. I selected black ones from her flock in hopes of getting the blue eggs from blue hens...at least one of the hens is doing her job

What bright and beautiful colors! Is at an Auracauna laying them? Mine are usually pale colored eggs, not that bright! Beautiful!

When we change males in our breeding we wait a week before we are sure it is from the new male. We keep records of which eggs came from which pens so we know when we have winners in the show pen. It is fun to track a chick to adulthood to see what they come out like. Good luck,
Alicia

LOL, Nancy Jo, I am!

They're awfully messy looking, aren't they? But it's been so wet that their feet are all muddy. I took the pic before brushing most of it off...City Boy'll never eat them looking like that

Those are sooo pretty!!! Those hens would sure be mad at me, I think--I'd be out there everyday with a camera!

I don't know one thing about the why's of eggs, but I do know that you have lovely ones!

Just think of all of the roads there are...all of the things I haven't seen....yet.
