I bought 4 goose eggs from a lady in Ocala, FL last weekend..I got them home and have them on a heating pad and also with a 60 watt bulb over them..trying to maintain a 99 degree temps...turning the eggs 4-5 times a day and giving them a 15 minute a day "cooling" period. ..yes, I did some research online..
also about once a day I moisten them ever so slightly by putting a little lukewarm water on my hands as I turn them. I only do that about 2 times a day .
Anyhow..wish me well..I'd be delighted if just one of them hatched out, but of course I'm not holding my breathe.
But at only $2 I didn't figure I had too much to lose on giving it a try.I'm on day 6 today on a 29-34 day project.

Tina, hope they do well for you. When they do start hatching out sometimes they may look like their having trouble. It's tempting to try to help them but don't, they'll be able to do it themselves. I had about 30 in my incubator and me and the kids videotaped them pecking their way out. It was a blast! Be sure to have a warmer ready to keep them under after their hatched out and let them dry well before moving them out to the warmer. I can't wait to see some pictures!

Hey Mama Goose,

We have a timber management company and two of our foresters in Cross City, FL have farms. If you need to find a home for your lil hatchlings, let me know.

This sounds like a fun project. Good Luck and we will all be waiting to hear in the next few days what is happening.

no cheeps yet, and I had to throw one of the eggs out last night..uggh! I was washing dishes and thought I smelled my garbage disposal..twas not my garbage disposal! so I very, very carefully wrapped it up in paper towel then into a garbage bag and asked hubby to discard it..uggh!
There are 3 left now and so far no stink..but no peeping yet either.
I am really beginning to have my doubts that anything will come of this other than yucky smells..uggh!
I did try though and we have a few more days to find out if anything will do ..other than smell.ha.

I have told hubby that if my eggs don't hatch I'd like to find 2 baby ducklings and have a pair of Peking ducks. ..I'd actually love to have an Indian Runner still...but I figure they are a bit smaller than the Pekings and I'd hate for an owl or hawk to scoop it up around here as we do have a pair of hawks that soar over the house from time to time and we have had owls in the pine trees out front of the house..so I think a bigger duck would stand a better chance since I am wanting them to free range during the day and just do what ducks do.

But no peeps yet.:0(

now mind ya'll I have no idea what I'll do with these babies if they hatch "in the city!!!" haha..but at least I'll have had the chance to say.."I tried it!"
Now right around the corner from me is a large goat farm with about 200 goats and 2 old nearly blind donkeys(donkeys with cataracts)..in a residential area...this goat farm is directly behind a resturaunt off the highway..it has been "grandfathered in" and has been there for over 30 yrs! It's only one street over, and about a city blocks length away...not very far at all..actually they used to have roosters in the area too and we used to hear the roosters every day.

I'd think that if the folks have tolerated that for 30 yrs..what's one baby goose... huh?...but of course I do know where there are other geese....in fact right in town in another residential area there is a large duck pond and there are muscovy ducks and toulouse geese kept there and folks take them cracked corn and bread scraps., etc...so..if I'm not able to keep any here..well..I will have a place that it/or they can go and be fed and folks can enjoy seeing it/them..."if" it/them even hatch out.

Hi Tina,
Sounds like your experiment is going well. The clear egg is going to be no good. The chick never developed in that one. The others sound good. I bet in a few days you can start to hear some chirping. I'll keep my fingers crossed that nothing goes wron with the hatching. Good luck,
Alicia

already to day 24 today on this project..one egg appears to be clear with no color in it when held to a bright light, but 3 eggs all have a darker color and the air sacks have enlarged a bit...now I certainly hope that the darker color doesn't mean rottenness..eeew. that would be just disgusting!

If and this is a big "IF" these eggs actually do...the "pipping" is supposed to begin in about 4 more days.

Tomorrow begins the "do not turn the eggs" phase.

It has already been an interesting project.

I turn the eggs about 3 times a day and each time I'll get them wet a little bit to keep them moist enough to provide some humidity.

Who knows??? in a few days we'll find out one way or another if this actually has worked.

lol well I guess so..it was a 60 watt bulb and I cupped my hands around the egg..I could see the air sack and something darkish shaped like in the eggs... in 3 of them.
so yep..I guess I did a farmgal ultrasound today LOL

Tina,
Is the bright light the Farm Girls way of doing an ultrasound ? :) And the bright light is the modern version of candling.

I have no idea about the temperature determining the sex of the bird..maybe someone else might know.

Good Luck Tina. We did this successfully with lizard eggs one time. But ours we had to leave in the same position so they wouldn't drown in their own sac. They were so cute when they came out. I can't remember how long we incubated them for. You will have fun when the babies hatch. Remember, you will be their mom. Are bird eggs like reptiles in that the temp. determines the sex of the hatchling?
Tina Michelle Posted - Feb 26 2007 : 11:27:26 AM
I'm on day 8 so far...about 20 or so more days to go.They are supposed to start hatching at day 28-34.

Good Luck
Don't give up and PLEASE keep us posted.
What I did with chickens last year, was kept a spray bottle and filled it with warm water to mist the eggs once a day. They should be kept humid.
