Well, this is what happens when I let my husband go pig shopping! We are brand new at raising pigs . . . originally just 8 for 4-H projects. Then people started asking about buying them for butcher, so dear hubby, Ron, decided he should get a few more. By a few I thought five more at best. So I was a bit stunned when he came home announcing he had purchased all the weiner pigs available in Spokane County. So now we have 27! I never imagined being a pig farmer . . . and now we have 27! Already Ron and the boys chased a little squeeler trying to make a run for it over 20 acres, before they finally dog piled on the poor little guy (or would that be pig piled?! LOL!) and then yesterday the little porkers managed to lift their gate in the stall so when we entered the barn they were all over the place. Luckily the barn doors were shut or we would have really had problems. After an hour of shooing them, trying to scare them, talking baby talk, bribing them with food, etc. we finally got them all back in. I have been nagging Ron for another dog (he says two cats and one dog are enough). After seeing his "lack of control" with the pigs, I think I might just go shopping for a "few" dogs! LOL!

Pigs are very clean and really don't smell that bad if you manage them correctly. We had up to 20 at a time (usually piglets being raised for folks) with no smell (nothing noticable), while the neighbor went the 'pigs like mud' route and his one sow could be smelled all through the lower valley.

Give your babes a place to cool off in the summer months, but allow them access to nice, dry pasture or barn and you should be fine

Past Blessing---MYSELF, I LOVE PIGS GROWING UP AND WORKING ON A FARM WITH OVER 1000, SOWS. WITH A AVERAGE OF 50 PIGS BEING BORN A DAY. MY QUESTION TO YOU IS -HAVE YOUR PIGS BEEN HOG RING YET? THAT WERE YOU PUT 3 OR 4 RINGS IN THERE NOSE. THIS HELPS TO KEEP THEM FROM RUTTING UP THE GROUND. ALSO HELPS TO KEEP THEM IN THE PEN. THE NEXT QUESTION IS ARE YOU GOING TO CASTRATED THE MALE PIGS? IF YOU ARE THIS NEEDS TO BE DONE WHEN THEY ARE SMALL, THE LARGER THEY ARE THE HARDER IT IS TO HOLD THEM DOWN FOR THIS.

The smell is pretty contained right now only because it is "frozen". Didn't realize smells could freeze did ya?! LOL! Come spring, it should be quite ripe smelling!! Today two boys are sick, the other has practice after school and Ron is working, so guess who gets to take care of all 27 herself. After that, I think I'll make a poster of Ron to shoot darts at! LOL! Seriously, they are fun, but messy little things!

Oh my, oh my! I am laughing but am also wondering has your husband ever smelled 27 pigs?!!! "Lordy, lordy!" as my Gram used to say!
But I must admit 27 squealing piglets WOULD be hard to resist!

with a happy heart

My side hurts from laughing.....I want piggies (not 27)
Sounds like after the frustration was done, you had a good chuckle at the events.

That is so funny! Well, from my perspective anyway! I am sure that it was very frustrating chasing piggies all over the place. I just cannot imagine having 27 pigs!

Oh, that is too funny! Better put that boy back on his leash... You know...pigs are pretty smart; they can multiply!

What a great picture in my head from your description of the pig events! Hmmm....sounds like border collie time!
Good luck with the little piggies.
