We're thinking about raising a few meat birds this year. Has anyone got experience with Freedom Rangers? Have you been happy with them?

LOL, Anne, that is what they sound like, isn't it? I'm sure we could come up with a cartoon concept. After all, they did Hero's in a Halfshell, right?
I think I'll give a few a try and see what they're like. I know someone else not far from me that's been looking into them, so perhaps I can buy a few when they order (100 chick minimum...they've got the space, thankfully, as I don't!)

Freedom Rangers!!! Wow never heard that before, first picture in my mind are chickens out on a mission to free the world of crime!  I can see it now a whole cartoon series on the "Freedom Rangers" with big FR on their chests! Sorry got carried away here! Now that I checked out the link, I have seen these chickens before, they are really cool big red chickens!

I've never heard of these. I'm sure you realize they are "improved" strains, in other words - crosses. That's not a bad thing if you intend to free range and sell processed birds, but there are many standards that do I'm sure, just as well on the range with better live resell and marketing value.
People want to hear "heritage bird", old variety means tried, true and trusted. Crosses sell real well when there is a novelty factor. See "showgirls".
If you try them, let us know how they turn out.

Here's the link to the birds; it's the only link I can find with any real information. I did find a couple old posts on another forum about them. Seems to be a lower mortality than with cornishx but takes a bit longer to get to the freezer. Comparable, or a little more in price for finished bird, from what I read. For those selling at the market, they said it was a hard sell the first time, but once customers tasted the birds they would come back with no problem and spend more $ than on the cornish.

I've never heard of them either..they sure sound interesting!! I have banty hens and two roosters right now...I just love chickens! I usually raise some cornish cross rocks for meat each year..skipped last year but will do it for sure this year.

I've never heard of Freedom Rangers, but I like the name! I've really enjoyed my Buff Orpingtons, however, for both eggs and meat...
