Holly is in the hospital. She had a bowel movement lastnight, formed, but black (internal bleeding - this am she drank some water and I gave her her pills and she vomited and it was awful, I was gagging to clean it up. There was some blood, but the smell was terrible.....They called from the vets, I took her and she was very weak, resting her head on my arms. Seems her white cell count which should be about 17 is 54 - they do not know if she is fighting a real bad infection or she has cancer, dr said her gut feeling is cancer. When she had her dental done a few weeks ago she is older so they do geriatric blood work and something was off on her count then, whey didn't they see this and they knew she had lost weight. I am heart sad. They are going to take an xray to see if they see a mass, I don't know what I will do.

Walmart run for pet food today. I bought Holly some soft treats and some different soft foods. She ate a dog treat and a cookie bone soaked in water (almost all of it) I put some soft pedigree from the pouch in a bowl and she just sniffed it and tucked her tail down :(
I don't know if she is going to keep eating or stop again. She drank water, that is good but she needs to eat....I gave her a piece of my sausage link from the diner but she did not eat that either. Oh well, I will try again later to get her interested in eating. She looks so thin - I may just have to get the ultrasound, I will talk to my vet tomorrow and see what she says - ultrasounds only get done one day a week on Tues at another clinic.
Off to feed the deer -

Thanks Heidi - it is nice to know that behind the scenes are pets are getting the best of care too! My fridge is filled with the foods we have tried, baby food too - we did the ground hamburger and rice which she did really well on before her dental - I have some chicken I can run through the coffee grider for her too - she is still being very picky - I know she misses eating regular dog food and will try to chew it and I guess I should not stop her - her mouth has healed nicely since the dental.
Her tail is wiggling today so that is a good sign, she drank lots of water, no vomiting - no diarrhea that I have noticed, she went out without me this am. This am I made her a scrambled egg with cheese and I thought she would eat it but I think she just picked at it - but I am not going to rush her....all in good time - she is back sleeping in my bed and kept me warm this am, I was freezing, she loves that and I know it helps her feel better and more secure.

Kathy,
I hope Holly is doing better. I work for a vet and when we have animals in that are not doing well eating we feed them baby food. Uuaslly Gerber first foods like pureed chicken or turkey but nothing with vegetables. We also make sure that they go home stictly on food for animals. Most people aren't aware that table scraps can make their pets sick since they have a harder time processing fatty foods. I have learned so much since working there, my poor babies very rarely get people treats. My dog Daisy thinks she is on rations. If it helps to know this most of us that work for our clinic during off times spend alot of time talking and holding our sick patients. You can just tell by how they look at you that they miss their people. Please let us know how she is doing

Doggy hugs to Holly

Yippee!!! I'm so happy to hear the good news!! I've been afraid to check this thread but I "Farmgirled Up" and did it and I'm so glad I did. I'm so sensitive about the wellbeing of dogs, ALL dogs that it literally hurts my sole to hear about one in distress. Thankfully, you are such a kind hearted person/Mom and you take the best care of your babies. Please give Miss Holly Bush a big hug and kiss from me. Keep us posted. I'll continue to pray for her. Big Giant Hugs, Lu

Holly had a good day today, she ate some and drank plenty of water. No vomiting, no diarrhea - she has been taking Nutri-Stat (something like Nutrical for quick energy) and seem perkier today, she is sleeping in my bed. I notice her breathing to be a little shallow, but she has a heart murmur also and I imagine she is trying to regain her strength- I think I managed to disguise her Baytril in some cheese tonight hehehe - the things we do for love - I would try liverwurst, but I think it would upset her stomach.
I may not have to take her for the ultrasound, I am hoping she improves enough that we will not need it done.
Holly sends everyone a big "buck uck - dog lips touched my lips" Kiss and says thanks for praying for me!

Holly spent the night sleeping in my bed, she got hot this am between me and my husband. She is picking at her food and ate a few little slices of string cheese - managed to poke the Baytril down her throat. No vomiting since she has been home - hope she continues on the road to recovery. She is skinny.

Bless you for praying for her and me!

What a giving heart you have, Kathy! I think it's so special how you offered a puppy to the family of the poodle. When blessings are given....blessings are received! I'm praying! Give that Holly Bush a hug from me....and one for you, too! Susan

My thoughts are with you Kathy, that Holly will survive this illness episode. Silver/grey hair is earned, strand by strand...I have them to prove it!
My mother used to say '' never rains but what it pours'' and this is a prime example. It's so hard when our loved ones, whether it's two or four legged, are sick. Lori took both Presley and Kobe, the cat, in to be cremated together. Now she's down to three dogs, maybe 6 cats, two parakeets, one feather picking cockatiel and a cockatoo. Oh, forgot the aviary full of doves and a few pigeons out back. One woman rescue for her area...someone has to do it.

Thanks all of you - it has not been the best week, but at least it is improving. I think these hard times help me to grow in spirit - and a little more grey hair hehehe, but then isn't silver hair becoming quite chic looking?

Georgann, I never thought about the blood loss during and after the dental - gosh you are a great nurse!

Kathy,
I didn't realize Holly is your furbaby who had the teeth worked on too. I really wonder if it is an infection related to the tooth work. Sounds like she swallowed alot of blood too.(black tarry stools with a foul odor) I really hope that she is clearing up. You've had a really bad week. So, so sorry......Hugs and lots of love coming your way,
G

Holly is home from the hospital and is doing better. She may have just a severe infection and she seems to be responding well to the Baytril. I will know more in a few days. She is eating and that is a good sign. Keep up the prayers.
The people who had the 3 yr old poodle had to put her down - she had another ultrasound and had more cancer. I feel so very bad for these people, it was there only dog. I told my vet to tell them that I would give them my big fat healthy cocker spaniel puppy - I hope she tells them. I hate to see anyone so sad.

Just talked to my vet. They see some questionable areas on the xray that they did so I am going to schedule her for an abdominal ultrasound. Right now she has IV fluids, her blood sugar had dropped some too - and she is on Baytil a stronger antibiotic. She has had no vomiting or stool since there, that is good. At least with the Ultrasound I will know what direction we are heading in.
Another client of the vet has a three year old poodle that they were going to do exploratory surgery on for liver masses but they found out the dog will need whole blood and they can't do it there like they were supposed to. The vets are having a tough day too - and I feel just awful for the person with a sick 3 yr old poodle, they must surely be heartbroken. I am praying for this little dog too! I am thankful that so far I have had Holly for 10 yrs that I will be able to cherish.
