Guess what? I have new laying hens! One of my farmhand's sister has a neighbor, who after raising and homeschooling 4 children is letting go, "I'm going to live in a teepee this summer, sail the Sea of Cortez, spend more time with my grandchildren ..."

I had her package them up the night before (once they're on their roost for the night, it's less stressful for them--they just fall into your hands).

Anyway, this morning she brought me 11 Buff Orpingtons (my favorite chicken) that are only one year old and laying, and HEALTHY as all get out, and trained to follow her everyone to the sound of grain in a bucket. I'm over the moon. They became instant friends with the four I have left after the morning of the coyote (2 buffs and 2 Araucanas). I'm not letting my girls free-range for now (they have a large run) but I miss seeing them out and about. Given I've never lost a chicken to a predator in 20 years, I might get brave again.

Meanwhile, my new little baby chicks are growing like weeds, but even so it will take a while before I have eggs again. With my new buffs I'll be gathering eggs again tomorrow morning in my cute egg-gathering apron (although my 4 remaining girls gave me two eggs this morning).

P.S. I have a water nipple in a lemonade pitcher as their source of water. Everything stays clean and they love playing with the little mechanism in order to drink water. It takes chicks about two minutes to figure it out.

How are all of your new Girls doing now? I hope that newest babies are growing and mixing in well with the others. This time next year, you are going to be having lots of great eggs for everyone at the farm!!

MaryJane,

Our area has so many predators this year after such a warm winter. We've seen lots of foxes and fisher cats here. My bff lost her rooster who was a tame guy and one of her hens...while she was gardening nearby!

Farmgirl hugs,
Nicole

So sorry to read about the predator getting a couple of your hens. I love chickens! They sure have a lot of food! lol

Sadly, we were unable to buy some from our local feed store this spring. They sold out in no time. I guess I'll have to order on line.

Those hens are beautiful and what isn't there to love about baby chicks! Lots of great ideas you have put to use for feeding and watering.
Nice clean henhouse!

Yay for new chickens! How exciting and I am glad you are able to give them a wonderful home. :)

So sorry about the coyote incident though, that must have been very upsetting.

How wonderful! I'm glad you were able to get some new hens. Your little baby chicks are adorable. One of the books I read to Tilton has a touch and feel baby chick and he loves petting it! Makes me excited to get some of my own in the future.
