Well, after nearly 3 months of eager anticipation, hubby and I will be picking up our new puppy in 11 days! We are ready, but here's the kicker......the breeder has just stared a new job and can't take the time for the puppy she wants. This lady has asked me if I want to co-own a puppy w/ her to be trained as a search and rescue dog. HOW COOL IS THAT?! So this might concievably mean we take 2 puppies home??? I just read her newest e-mail this a.m. and haven't run it by hubby yet. We used to be a 2 dog family, but the first dog belonged to his grnadmother and was an outside dog. Now we are talkin' 2 inside dogs. This is fine by me, but I'm not the only one in this relationship. However I am the one who is most famillar w/ the dust rag and sweeper.
It's a huge responsibility and I'm indeed flattered. My stomach is killing me now Oh the excitement!!!!
Pick-up day will be Sunday the 14th |

I love the name Maggie, more from a Rod Stewart "Maggie May" or "Maggie Mae" aspect. It';s a cool name for a female dog; sounds mature, calm, strong and confident. Post pics when you can!

YEAAAA! So here we are, day 2. I don't have a digital camera, so when my folks visit over the weekend, I'll see if some can be added.
First night home was a breeze. After spending all day in the car and not being able to sleep fitfully from 4 pm on, the ride home was quiet. Puppies came from MD so it made for a long day. We can check off car rides as something pleasant. (A social call to the vet tomorrow will only be to set up for the 2nd series of shots). Went to work yesterday morning and saw a few friends. Came home for a first walk in the woods.
Today we'll go to the Y and hopefuly meet up with some kids.
Nights have been ok, although last night was rather rough. Seems, Jasmine (I changed the name last minute)has taken on an affinity like a heat seeking missile for chicken poop! SO, even with 2 trips outside last night, there was a nice job in the crate this a.m. Guess I'd be howling too. Until we get another ground soaking rain, all chickens will be locked up, and we'll walk an alternate route through the yard. Jasmine has trained well to going outside. I have to be quick about watching for her to sniff around inside.......that's the cue so you have to be really vigilant! We have pee pads by the front door just in case. It helps that hubby and I are outside people, so as long as it's not raining, we tend to linger outside for as long as possible.
I'll have one more day at home tomorrow. For those new mothers in the group I can sympathize about getting back into the groove, nevermind if one takes off 3 months or more!
We have 2 cats and they now have attitudes. Sam, our big mouser went on a walk with us yesteday, but still isn't too sure.
So here's a question: Same as what we fed our other dog, we feed a wholistic diet that contains no refined grain products. I wonder if the grain in the chicken poop is what makes it so appealing. Sure can't be the taste!? |

So we made the dry run, bought some toys came home and assembled the crate-made it really cozy......bought food today So now we play the waiting game |

I called Mom tonight and asked if she felt like making a dry run w/ me on my days off to the breeder's house. hubby and I will be picking up pup....in the evening in the dark somewhere in Durham. I got directions via map quest, but have never had much success. Mom has a GPS for the car, so it will most likely be more accurate.
We'll also make a trip to a pet store for a few basics, and I'll buy lunch for my mother's troubles. She loves the adventure.
Looks like we'll settle on Maggie for a name. Everyting else just sounds stupid or unright. 'Cause remember, as some point i'll have to call the pup, so it has better sound good when shouted |

Our co-ownership has been pretty mellow. When Glenn wanted to show Red he would do it, not us. We took him to obedience school but just didn't teach him to automatically sit when we stopped walking. I would imagine, after seeing Best in Show, it could be much worse! Enjoy your new puppy!

I'm tossing around the names, Maggie- for Hillary Swank's character in Million Dollar Baby Thought om Mina as in Willamina from Bram Stoker's Dracula.. According to the breeder this is the "W" litter. Cinnamon, since the pup will be a mahagony when she is older and a list of a few others. I have 'till next Wednesday to nail it down.
The breeder called last night, and I was so excited I couldn't sleep. got back up at 10, watched alittle t.v. had a small bowl of ice cream then finally gave it up around 11
Also, come to find out, the breeder wanted to co-own just one dog, notmine plus another. When a co-ownership happens, the dog lives w/ one person, and the breeder has say in the training, breeding and a bunch of other things. So really it kind of takes some of the fun away, I think. I wanted a dog to be mine....outright. I also read where breeders do this somtimes if they feel a client can't front enough $$ or doesn't have much experience w/ the breed. She wanted to know if I was interested in showing. Really, all we want is another family companion. If I had more Saturdays off, it might not be a problem either but after seeing a dog some years ago that was de-barked...I decided the show ring was not for me and any of my dogs.. So instead of 2 puppies, we'll (whew!!!) just be taking the one home.

Kathy ~ I wish you lived closer! I absolutely adore cockers. I would love to visit and cuddle your puppies! I have a 10 year old parti color cocker male and he is the love of my life. He has been the best dog ~ no chewing, digging, excess barking, and is wonderful around my wee grandbabies. He is a little too beggie (new word!), but that is from me spoiling him I would like to get another parti color in the next couple of years, so life won't be so unbearable when my older one passes. What color do you breed and what colors do you have? |

forgot to add, the pups are Belgian Tervurens....not as spastic as border collies, but every bit as smart. |

Take lots of pictures. They don't stay small long. Congratulations on the new addition or additions to your family. Twins...how wonderful.

Kudos to you Kathy...that's so exciting! My mother had to pick up our first dog 8 years ago. I was in a courthouse dealing w/ divorce proceedings, so the whole day was very bittersweet. I should have been the one picking up my own dog and it should have been a much happier occasion.
This time all is well...I have a fabulous husband of 7 years and we'll go to pick up our fur baby together! I'll also be taking a few days off from work for some extra bonding time. those first few days are stressful enough, nevermind just plain precious and never again to be repeated in the same way!
I also know about the critical window for puppies and plan to take my baby EVERYWHERE!! Another gal in my work section has a Brittany who is a little shy of 10 weeks right now. Looks like we may be scheduling some play dates!

AND.......even as an animal keeper, you never loose the wonder about the birthing process. So good luck in another few weeks for your mamma dog!

What kind of puppy are you getting? We own our St. Bernard with his breeder; he was a show dog. It was easy for us and meant he was half price! Training a dog will be more work but I'd imagine also very fulfilling. I loved just doing obedience training with Red! I'd love to get a new puppy, and maybe a bigger house since it would have to be another Saint!

It is like picking up a child hehehe, I get my new little chocolate Cocker Spaniel tomorrow at Newark Airport. I breed cockers and have a female that is due for puppies on the 18th - the last puppies I sold were so spoiled and I cried like a baby when I sold them. I am boarding a corgi from Massachusettes while his owner travels (I can never take a vacation, I would miss my own critters too much)LOL, I was cooking chicken livers and gizzards for my pregnant cocker this afternoon - Kathy's Canine Kitchen over here! Share your puppy pictures!!!!

Yay for you Anna! I loved bringing my puppy home. Yes they are hard work, but they are always there when you need them. No matter what kind of day I am having, my dog is always there wagging his tail greeting me & happy to see me. He may really just be hungry, but I let myself think he's happy I'm home too! :) Have fun! It will be nice to see them play together & it will make separation from mama so much easier on them. Let us know what you decide on for his/her name
